Measurement of the Charge Exchange for N7+, O7+ Ions in Collision with Atomic H

open access: yes, 2022
The absolute total cross sections for the charge exchange between highly charged ions 15N7+, O7+, and atomic H have been measured with the ion-atom merged-beams apparatus at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The collision energy range is from 1224 down to 2

Charge Exchange in X-Ray Astrophysics

open access: yes, 2023
Charge exchange is an atomic process that primarily occurs at interfaces between the neutral and ionized gas. The study of the process has been carried out on three levels: the theoretical calculation of the cross sections, the laboratory measurements of reaction rates and line strengths, and the observational constraints using celestial objects. For a

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.

Charge Exchange Studies with n-, l-, and spin-Quantum State Population in Ar7+-He Collisions

open access: yesAtoms
The energy-dependent population of fine quantum states in single electron capture (SEC) reflects the intrinsic collision dynamics. Here we report experimental studies of Ar7+ ions colliding with He in the energy range of 1.05–17.5 keV/u.

A comparison of empirical and experimental O7+, O8+, and O/H values, with applications to terrestrial solar wind charge exchange

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
Solar wind charge exchange occurs at Earth between the neutral planetary exosphere and highly charged ions of the solar wind. The main challenge in predicting the resultant photon flux in the X‐ray energy bands is due to the interaction efficiency, known

The Shewanella oneidensis Fic enzyme SoFic targets the switch‐I region of EF‐Tu for AMPylation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fic enzymes mediate diverse post‐translational modifications across all domains of life, including AMPylation. Prokaryotic EF‐Tu can be AMPylated and deAMPylated by the conserved Fic enzyme SoFic. Structural and biochemical approaches were used to characterize the effect of AMPylation on EF‐Tu, SoFic's enzymatic activities, and the enzyme‐target ...

Experimental evaluation of the vapor box divertor concept with an open vapor box module in Magnum-PSI

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
A promising approach to handle the intense plasma heat flux in the divertor region of a tokamak is the Vapor Box Divertor (VBD). Here plasma-lithium interaction creates a dense lithium vapor cloud which interacts with the incoming plasma, effectively ...

State-Selective Single-Electron Capture from H2O at Low Collision Energies Using the Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo Method

open access: yesAtoms
A three-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo method is used to investigate state-specific electron capture from H2O by highly charged ions. The radial and momentum distributions of the target electron are modeled using a one-center molecular orbital ...

New Interacting Boson Fermion-Fermion Model results [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences
We present a new application of the Interacting Boson Model (IBM) and its extensions for describing double charge exchange reactions. The study of double charge exchange reactions induced by heavy ions involving candidate nuclei for neutrinoless double ...
