Laser-ablation charge exchange for collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy

A charge-exchange cell based on pulsed-laser ablation has been developed and applied to collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy. A fast lithium ion beam has been neutralized in the charge-exchange cell and resonance ionization spectra of the 2s2S1/2−2p2P1/2,3/20 transitions of lithium have been successfully observed.

Abstract The emittance of a H− ion beam produced by ionizing an atomic hydrogen beam in an alkali vapour within a solenoidal magnetic field has been measured. The observed transverse emittance growth due to the magnetic field agrees well with the prediction by Ohlsen et al. [1].

A study is made of the ionization equilibrium of the elements H, He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S in a low-density gas. The ionic composition of such a gas at less than 1 million K depends strongly on the charge-exchange reactions. Tables of the ionic composition in the temperature range 100,000-1,000,000 K are given. 14 references.

We present results of classical-trajectory Monte Carlo calculations for bare ions on helium atoms. We impose the Heisenberg uncertainty principle on the classical system and obtain two important benefits. Firstly, the classical He atom is stabilized and thus full four-body classical-trajectory Monte Carlo calculations are possible.
