Chemoprevention by Pyrimethamine
Immunopharmacology and Immunotoxicology, 2005The goal of the current research was to investigate the chemopreventive potency of an antimalaria drug, pyrimethamine, in in vitro conditions. The fibrosarcoma (WEHI-164) cell line was used for evaluating cytotoxicity, matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) activity, and apoptosis. Pyrimethamine and methotrexate were used at concentrations of 0-8 microg/ml

Chemoprevention is a relatively new area of clinical cancer research. In this article we have presented a general overview of the concepts as well as the status of ongoing clinical trials using the most promising agents in selected populations. The reader is referred to recent excellent reviews presenting more detailed discussions of the various topics

Preventive Medicine, 1996
Chemoprevention of cancer is a means of cancer control in which the occurrence of this disease is prevented by administra tion of one or several chemical compounds. This Perspective deals with the areas in cancer control that this field addresses, the promise that it holds, and the problems that must be solved in order to realize its goals.

Resveratrol and chemoprevention
Cancer Letters, 2009Resveratrol is a phytoalexin, highly abundant in skins of red grapes and moderately abundant in peanuts and blueberries. Originally a constituent of oriental medicines, it has lately been rediscovered for a plethora of beneficial properties such as anti-cancer, anti-aging, antiviral, cardiovascular and neuroprotective effects, thereby making it one of ...

Chemoprevention by isothiocyanates
Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, 1995Naturally occurring and synthetic isothiocyanates are among the most effective chemopreventive agents known. A wide variety of isothiocyanates prevents cancer in the rat lung, mammary gland, esophagus, liver, small intestine, colon, and bladder. Mechanistic studies have shown that this chemopreventive activity is due to favorable modification of phase ...

Critical Reviews in Oncology/Hematology, 1998
Detection of cancer at an early stage, by screening asymptomatic persons who are at risk for cancer has the aim of decreasing the number of cancer-related deaths. In practice, there are no guidelines for cancer screening in older people and it is often neglected, since reduced life expectancy and competing causes of death are considered to reduce the ...

Current Oncology Reports, 2004
The United States is experiencing a surge in the incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma. Because melanoma is typically refractory to available anticancer therapy, exploration of preventive strategies has become a priority. In this review, the rationale for chemoprevention, a new and potentially powerful approach to controlling melanoma, is discussed.

Despite efforts to promote sun protection behaviors, melanoma incidence continues to increase. The prognosis of advanced melanoma remains extremely poor in spite of treatment advances, emphasizing the importance of exploring additional preventive measures. We sought to summarize the results of published research on candidate chemoprevention agents for ...

Although there is strong epidemiological evidence to suggest the preventability of many cancers based on non-experimental studies at both ecological and individual levels, there have been few applications of that knowledge to randomized trials. The randomized trials were mainly designed to demonstrate the effect of chemoprevention on risk of cancer ...

Chemoprevention of breast cancer
The Lancet, 2001One in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer. Family history, hormonal factors and benign breast disease have been identified as key factors in the development of breast cancer. Until recently the only treatment option for women identified as being at high risk of developing breast cancer was bilateral prophylactic mastectomy ...
