KCC2 membrane diffusion tunes neuronal chloride homeostasis [PDF]

open access: yesNeuropharmacology, 2020
Neuronal Cl- homeostasis is regulated by the activity of two cation chloride co-transporters (CCCs), the K+-Cl- cotransporter KCC2 and the Na+-K+-Cl- cotransporter NKCC1, which are primarily extruding and importing chloride in neurons, respectively. Several neurological and psychiatric disorders including epilepsy, neuropathic pain, schizophrenia and ...

Chloride Homeostasis in Developing Motoneurons

2022
Maturation of GABA/Glycine chloride-mediated synaptic inhibitions is crucial for the establishment of a balance between excitation and inhibition. GABA and glycine are excitatory neurotransmitters on immature neurons that exhibit elevated [Cl-]i. Later in development [Cl-]i drops leading to the occurrence of inhibitory synaptic activity. This ontogenic

Chloride cotransporters, chloride homeostasis, and synaptic inhibition in the developing auditory system

Hearing Research, 2011
The role of glycine and GABA as inhibitory neurotransmitters in the adult vertebrate nervous system has been well characterized in a variety of model systems, including the auditory, which is particularly well suited for analyzing inhibitory neurotransmission.

Chloride Channels in Astrocytes: Structure, Roles in Brain Homeostasis and Implications in Disease [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2019
Astrocytes are the most abundant cell type in the CNS (central nervous system). They exert multiple functions during development and in the adult CNS that are essential for brain homeostasis. Both cation and anion channel activities have been identified in astrocytes and it is believed that they play key roles in astrocyte function.

Cardiovascular Homeostasis in Rats Chronically Exposed to Mercuric Chloride

1984
Two groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats received from weaning 50 micrograms/ml of mercury as mercuric chloride (HgCl2) in drinking water for 320 and 350 days. Hg exposure increased cardiac inotropism, without chronotropic changes, in both groups, and induced arterial hypertension in the rats exposed for 350 days.

Impaired chloride homeostasis in epilepsy: Molecular basis, impact on treatment, and current treatment approaches

Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 2020
Epilepsies represent one of the most common neurological diseases worldwide. They are characterized by recurrent spontaneous seizures with severe impact on a patient's life. An imbalance in excitatory and inhibitory signalling is considered the main underlying pathophysiological mechanism.

Potent antimicrobial effect induced by disruption of chloride homeostasis

Chem, 2023
© 2023 Elsevier Inc.Artificial transmembrane ion transporters have proposed applicability to medicinal chemistry, where perturbation of normal cellular homeostasis has already been shown to induce apoptosis in mammalian cells; however, this effect has not been observed in bacteria.

Role of chloride-homeostasis in the inhibitory control of neuronal network oscillators

Journal of Neurophysiology, 1996
1. Spontaneous synaptic activity in networks formed by dissociated neurons from embryonic rat midbrain was analyzed in tight seal whole cell recordings. 2. Application of furosemide (0.5 mM) to the cell and its surrounding area increased the frequency of spontaneous synaptic currents.

Role of activity-dependent regulation of neuronal chloride homeostasis in development

Current Opinion in Neurobiology, 2007
The polarity of neurotransmission mediated by the gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) type A receptor depends crucially on intracellular chloride concentration, which is largely determined by the expression and function of cation/chloride co-transporters. Recent evidence shows how both activity and neurotrophic factors can affect GABAergic transmission in ...
