Scavenger receptor class B type I (SR-BI) mediates the selective uptake of HDL cholesteryl esters (CEs) and facilitates the efflux of unesterified cholesterol. SR-BI expression in macrophages presumably plays a role in atherosclerosis.

Background High total cholesterol and low HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol are important determinants of cardiovascular disease. Little is known about dyslipidemia among Turkish and Moroccan migrants, two of the largest ethnic minority groups ...

We studied the pathway of cholesterol efflux from fibroblasts by testing plasma samples from obese and lean subjects. Plasma samples were incubated with [3H]cholesterol-labeled human skin fibroblasts for 1 h to ensure uniform labeling of all of the high ...

Background The focus of studies on high-density lipoproteins (HDL) has shifted from HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) to HDL function. We recently demonstrated that low USF1 expression in mice and humans associates with high plasma HDL-C and low triglyceride ...

Boundary lipids of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor: spontaneous partitioning via coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation [PDF]
Reconstituted nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) exhibit significant gain-of-function upon addition of cholesterol to reconstitution mixtures, and cholesterol affects organization of nAChRs within domain-forming membranes, but whether nAChR partitions to cholesterol-rich liquid-ordered ("raft" or $l_o$) domains or cholesterol-poor liquid ...

The major high density lipoprotein (HDL) apolipoprotein, apoA-I, was knocked out by gene targeting in ES cells to provide a model for the study of HDL metabolism and its relationship to plasma and tissue cholesterol metabolism.

Blood lipoproteins shape the phenotype and lipid content of early atherosclerotic lesion macrophages: a dual-structured mathematical model [PDF]
Macrophages in atherosclerotic lesions exhibit a spectrum of behaviours or phenotypes. The phenotypic distribution of monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs), its correlation with MDM lipid content, and relation to blood lipoprotein densities are not well understood.

The main antiatherogenic function of HDL is to promote the efflux of cholesterol from peripheral cells and transport it to the liver for excretion in a process termed reverse cholesterol transport.

Zinc Finger Protein 202, genetic variation, and HDL cholesterol in the general population
Zinc Finger Protein 202 (ZNF202) is a transcriptional repressor that binds elements found predominantly in genes involved in HDL metabolism. We tested the following hypotheses: 1) frequencies of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and haplotypes in ...

Lateral-Pressure Profiles in Cholesterol-DPPC Bilayers [PDF]
By means of atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, we study cholesterol-DPPC (dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine) bilayers of different composition, from pure DPPC bilayers to a 1:1 mixture of DPPC and cholesterol. The lateral-pressure profiles through the bilayers are computed and separated into contributions from the different components.
