Intestinal cholesterol absorption

Current Opinion in Lipidology, 1999
The strong association between intestinal cholesterol absorption and total plasma cholesterol level has renewed interest in the absorptive process and stimulated the generation of new animal models. Increasingly, new studies suggest that cholesterol absorption is genetically controlled and supports a protein-mediated mechanism for cholesterol uptake ...

Cholesterol absorption

Current Opinion in Gastroenterology, 2002
Cholesterol absorption is a key regulatory point in human lipid metabolism because it determines the amount of endogenous biliary as well as dietary cholesterol that is retained, thereby influencing whole body cholesterol balance. Plant sterols (phytosterols) and the drug ezetimibe reduce cholesterol absorption and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol ...

Cholesterol esterase accelerates intestinal cholesterol absorption

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 2002
Mechanisms of acceleration of cholesterol absorption by cholesterol esterase were investigated in various experimental conditions. Lymphatic recovery of cholesterol intubated as a micellar solution containing phosphatidylcholine (PC) into the duodenum was enhanced by the co-administration of cholesterol esterase in rats drained of bile and pancreatic ...

Regulation of cholesterol absorption by phytosterols

Current Atherosclerosis Reports, 2006
Phytosterols are chemical homologs of cholesterol that are found in most plant foods and are particularly abundant in vegetable oils and whole grains. They interfere with the micellar solubilization of cholesterol in the intestine and reduce the efficiency of cholesterol absorption.

Cholesterol Absorption and Metabolism

2009
Inhibitors of cholesterol absorption have been sought for decades as a means to treat and prevent cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) associated with hypercholesterolemia. Ezetimibe is the one clear success story in this regard, and other compounds with similar efficacy continue to be sought.

Hypolipidemic therapy and cholesterol absorption

Current Atherosclerosis Reports, 2004
The advent of safe and effective hypolipidemic therapy has revolutionized the ability of the clinician to optimize abnormalities in the lipid profile. The advent of statin therapy has provided a potent option to decrease low-density lipoprotein and frequently allows achievement of National Cholesterol Education Program target lipid levels with ...

Absorption of dietary cholesterol in man

Metabolism, 1973
Abstract Cholesterol absorption was studied by balance methods in 10 hyperlipemic subjects. The cholesterol (401–1214 mg/day) and β-sitosterol (171–454 mg/day) were integral parts of the diets. The absorption was 37% ± 5% and the amounts of cholesterol absorbed were 149–508 mg/day.
