Bile acid metabolism and sleep: Mechanistic interplay and clinical implications of the gut–liver–brain axis

open access: yesSleep Research, Volume 3, Issue 2, Page 170-179, June 2026.
Abstract The bidirectional interplay between sleep and metabolic homeostasis is fundamental to physiological health. While the roles of glucose and lipid metabolism in sleep regulation have been extensively characterized, bile acids (BAs), which are traditionally viewed as digestive surfactants, are emerging as critical metabolic messengers with ...

Advances in cholesterol and lipoproteins detection for healthcare: A review

open access: yesVIEW, Volume 7, Issue 3, June 2026.
Cholesterol is one of the main biomarkers related to the development of cardiovascular diseases. Its detection still relies on traditional methods of analysis, such as gas and liquid chromatographies. Detection of free cholesterol in saliva with redox or enzymatic sensors or detection of lipoproteins in blood with aptamer sensors are currently the most

A Single Amino Acid Substitution in CspA Increases Germination Sensitivity and Broadens Bile Salt Germinant Specificity in Clostridioides difficile Spores

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 6, June 2026.
In reservoir‐associated RT033 strains, we observe a natural rewiring of spore germination that lowers the activation threshold and broadens bile‐salt specificity, enabling germination at low germinant levels and in response to typically inhibitory bile‐salts common in animal hosts.

The enclathration of alcohols by cholic acid

open access: yes, 1989
Bibliography: pages 220-231.A series of crystalline Cholic acid inclusion compounds were studied with a view to understanding the role of guest molecules in inducing and stabilizing a particular Cholic acid (host) lattice structure.

Novel Symptom Subgroups in Patients With Irritable Bowel Syndrome Are Associated With Healthcare Utilisation in Secondary and Tertiary Care

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, Volume 63, Issue 11, Page 1474-1486, June 2026.
In patients with IBS in secondary and tertiary care, latent class analysis model identified groups of individuals with more severe symptoms and greater impairments in quality of life at baseline and significantly higher rates of healthcare utilisation during longitudinal follow‐up. ABSTRACT Background & Aims Current classification systems for irritable

Atypical clinical presentation and successful treatment with oral cholic acid of a child with defective bile acid synthesis due to a novel mutation in the HSD3B7 gene

open access: yesPediatric Reports, 2017
We report definitive diagnosis and effective treatment with oral cholic acid in one Italian male child affected by 3β- hydroxy-Δ5-C27-steroid dehydrogenase (3β- HSD) deficiency. He presented with failure to thrive, hepatomegaly and multiple cystic images

Disordered Bile Acid Metabolism in Alcohol‐Related Hepatitis

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, Volume 63, Issue 12, Page 1658-1672, June 2026.
Serum conjugated primary bile acids accumulate in alcohol‐related hepatitis due to downregulation of hepatocyte bile acid transporters. Hepatocyte growth factor is elevated in alcohol‐related hepatitis and downregulates BSEP expression. This detrimentally affects the hepatoprotective adaptive reduction in NTCP/increase in BSEP seen in cholestasis ...

Mitochondrial‐Haplotype Influences Plasma Metabolome, Lipidome, and Proteome in a Sex Specific Manner in the Genetically Heterogenous OKC‐HETB/W Rat

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 40, Issue 10, 31 May 2026.
Multi‐omics profiling uncovers the effect of sex and mitochondrial‐haplotype on molecular fingerprints of aging in plasma. ABSTRACT The effect of mitochondrial‐haplotype (mt‐haplotype) on aging was studied using a unique rat model (OKC‐HETB/W), which has a heterogenous nuclear background combined with mitochondria from either Brown Norway (B‐haplotype)
