Viscoelastic and Morphologic Changes in the Lumbar Intervertebral Discs of the 5xFAD Mouse Model of Alzheimer's Disease

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 9, Issue 2, June 2026.
The intervertebral discs (IVDs) from mice with amyloid pathologies are larger, flatter, and exhibit increased energy absorption, making these IVDs more susceptible to damage. This heightened vulnerability may predispose elderly individuals with AD to disc injuries, accelerating IVD degeneration and spinal pain. ABSTRACT Background Chronic low back pain,

The Mechanisms of Chondroitin Sulphate Lyases Treatment in Promotion of Axonal Growth [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Poster PresentationIn Injured nerves, chondroitin sulphate (CS) is upregulated forming barriers with astrocytes/fibroblasts and other extracellular matrix molecules, and thereby hampering nerve regeneration.

Deletion of a Pax1 Sex‐Associated Genomic Region Associated With Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Leads to Disc Degeneration, Instability, and Vertebral Rotation in Mice

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 9, Issue 2, June 2026.
Overview of the effects of Pax1‐SAR deletion on gene expression, IVD degeneration, and resultant scoliotic‐like curvature between sexes. Proposed mechanism of sex‐dependent changes in gene expression in females (right) and males (left), resulting in sex‐dependent disc degeneration and scoliotic phenotypes.

Detrimental Effect of Low‐Magnitude High‐Frequency Vibration in an Ex Vivo Model of Intervertebral Disc Degeneration Despite Estrogen Treatment

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 9, Issue 2, June 2026.
Low‐magnitude high‐frequency vibration (LMHFV), with or without 17β‐oestradiol (E2), exacerbated papain‐induced bovine intervertebral disc degeneration, reducing cell viability, impairing matrix production, and increasing inflammation. E2 showed no protective effect against papain‐induced degeneration or LMHFV.

Glycosaminoglycans in human and bovine serum: detection of twenty-four heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate motifs including a novel sialic acid-modified chondroitin sulfate linkage hexasaccharide [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Heterogeneous heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate glycosaminoglycan (GAG) polysaccharides are important components of blood circulation. Changes in GAG quantity and structure in blood have been indicated in cancers and other human diseases.

Cleaning Matters: Impact of Surface Treatment Methods on Solid‐State Nanopore Noise for High Frequency Recording

open access: yesChemistry–Methods, Volume 6, Issue 5, May 2026.
The impact of different cleaning strategies on the noise spectrum of solid state nanopores was evaluated. Noise reduction is a key challenge in solid‐state nanopore experiments, as it directly limits signal resolution and the detectability of translocation events.

Acidic pH and acidic enzymes in atherosclerosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease characterized by accumulation of lipids and fibrous connective tissue in the arterial wall. Recently, it has been suggested that decrease in the pH of extracellular fluid of the arterial intima may enhance LDL ...

Age-related differences in human skin proteoglycans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Previous work has shown that versican, decorin and a catabolic fragment of decorin, termed decorunt, are the most abundant proteoglycans in human skin. Further analysis of versican indicates that four major core protein species are present in human skin ...
