Mixotrophy is the occurrence of phagotrophy and phototrophy in the same organism. In ciliates the intracellular phototroph can be unicellular green algae (zoochlorellae), dinoflagellates (zooxanthellae), cryptomonads or sequestered chloroplasts from ingested algae.

Ciliate evolution: The ribosomal phylogenies of the tetrahymenine ciliates
Journal of Molecular Evolution, 1989We have assembled and analyzed nucleotide sequences for several different rRNA components from tetrahymenine ciliates. These include previously published and some new 5S and 5.8S rRNAs for a total of 18 species. We also report sequences for some 30 species obtained by primer extension analysis of a region near the 5' end of the 23S rRNAs (region 580 ...

Procentrioles in ciliating and ciliated cells of chick trachea
Zeitschrift fr Zellforschung und Mikroskopische Anatomie, 1972Electron microscopy of 16 to 18 day old chick tracheas revealed that procentrioles are present near the basal ends of the recently matured centrioles and basal bodies of both ciliating and ciliated cells. Cylinders 0.1 μ in outside diameter in which densely staining walls and a central axial filament can often be detected, are present between the ...

A tumor of Rathke's cleft origin was studied, which showed some histologic features consistent with craniopharyngioma, but also had ciliated and mucin-containing cells more commonly observed in Rathke's cleft cysts. The combination of features provides further evidence that craniopharyngiomas and Rathke's cleft cysts have a common embryonic origin.
