Modeling of joints with clearance in flexible multibody systems

International Journal of Solids and Structures, 2001
Abstract This paper is concerned with the modeling of joints with clearance within the framework of finite element based dynamic analysis of nonlinear, flexible multi-body systems. For actual joints, clearance, lubrication and friction phenomena can significantly affect the dynamic response of the system.

Dynamic response of a revolute joint with clearance

Mechanism and Machine Theory, 1996
The response of a revolute joint in a four-bar mechanism with a clearance is investigated. Motion of a rocker-arm pin at the ground connection is modelled using a Lagrangian approach. When the resulting equations of motion are solved numerically, they show non-linear dependence on both the size of the clearance and the coefficient of friction between ...

Clearance for Welded Joints

Engineering Journal, 2019
Inadequate clearance can affect weld quality and efficiency. In extreme cases, obstructions may cause a lack of fusion between the base metal and the weld metal, causing a reduction in strength. Although flux cored arc welding (FCAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) have replaced shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) as the primary fabrication processes ...

Dynamics of Mechanisms With Slider Joints and Clearance

Volume 6B: 18th Biennial Conference on Mechanical Vibration and Noise, 2001
Abstract In this study a planar mechanism with a rotating sliding joint is investigated. Periodic behavior is observed for zero clearance of the sliding joint. The sliding joint with clearance is modeled using a kinematic coefficient of restitution and a coefficient of friction.

To model joints with clearance for tolerance analysis

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2014
Mechanical products are usually made by assembling many parts. Among the different types of links, bolts are widely used to join the components of an assembly. In a bolting, a clearance exists among the bolt and the holes of the part to join. This clearance has to be modelled in order to define the possible movements agreed to the joined parts.
