Feasibility of using risk prompts to prevent falls, dehydration and pulmonary aspiration in nursing homes: a clinical study protocol

open access: yesPilot and Feasibility Studies, 2018
Background Evidence has shown a relationship between dehydration, falls, and pulmonary aspiration among older adults in nursing homes, all of which contribute to loss of independence and quality of life.

Multidrug transporters (MRPs, ABCB1, ABCG2): expression and pharmacological importance in central nervous system (CNS)

open access: yes, 2022
One of the main challenges in brain drug distribution is the presence of blood-CNS barriers, which prevent the delivery of drugs to destination cells, such as neurons, astrocytes, or oligodendrocytes.

The role of serotonin in CNS diseases

open access: yes, 2023
Serotonin, a pivotal neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS), plays a crucial role in mood disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and migraine.

Microglial responses around intrinsic CNS neurons are correlated with axonal regeneration

open access: yes, 2010
Background: Microglia/macrophages and lymphocytes (T-cells) accumulate around motor and primary sensory neurons that are regenerating axons but there is little or no microglial activation or T-cell accumulation around axotomised intrinsic CNS neurons ...

Stage progression and neurological symptoms in Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense sleeping sickness: role of the CNS inflammatory response [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background: Human African trypanosomiasis progresses from an early (hemolymphatic) stage, through CNS invasion to the late (meningoencephalitic) stage.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

The clinical heterogeneity of entirely nonenhancing CNS lymphoma: a case series

open access: yes, 2021
CNS lymphoma often presents with atypical imaging characteristics leading to delay in diagnosis and initiation of treatment. Among the most rarely reported of these is entirely nonenhancing CNS lymphoma, which is estimated at an incidence of about 1 ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Characteristics and outcomes of diffuse non-midline gliomas with H3F3A gene mutation in the Kansai Molecular Diagnosis Network for CNS Tumors (Kansai Network): multicenter retrospective cohort study

open access: yesActa Neuropathologica Communications
Diffuse gliomas with H3F3A gene mutation such as H3.3 K27M and G34R/V are infrequently found in the cerebral hemisphere. These tumors may be called histone H3 K27M-mutant diffuse non-midline gliomas (NDMG) or H3 G34-mutant diffuse hemispheric gliomas ...
