A three-stage colonization model for the peopling of the Americas. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: We evaluate the process by which the Americas were originally colonized and propose a three-stage model that integrates current genetic, archaeological, geological, and paleoecological data.

Coalescent Theory for a Partially Selfing Population [PDF]
A coalescent theory for a sample of DNA sequences from a partially selfing diploid population and an algorithm for simulating such samples are developed in this article. Approximate formulas are given for the expectation and the variance of the number of segregating sites in a sample of k sequences from n individuals.

Can Theory Improve the Scope of Quantitative Metazoan Metabarcoding?
Using high-throughput sequencing approaches to quantify biodiversity has a number of hurdles, in particular that the number of reads for a given taxon may not be proportional to the number of individuals of that taxon in a sample.

Admixture of evolutionary rates across a butterfly hybrid zone
Hybridization is a major evolutionary force that can erode genetic differentiation between species, whereas reproductive isolation maintains such differentiation.

Legofit: estimating population history from genetic data
Background Our current understanding of archaic admixture in humans relies on statistical methods with large biases, whose magnitudes depend on the sizes and separation times of ancestral populations.

AllCoPol: inferring allele co-ancestry in polyploids
Background Inferring phylogenetic relationships of polyploid species and their diploid ancestors (leading to reticulate phylogenies in the case of an allopolyploid origin) based on multi-locus sequence data is complicated by the unknown assignment of ...

The species coalescent indicates possible bat and pangolin origins of the COVID-19 pandemic
A consensus species tree is reconstructed from 11 gene trees for human, bat, and pangolin beta coronaviruses from samples taken early in the pandemic (prior to April 1, 2020).

Coalescent theory for seed bank models [PDF]
We study the genealogical structure of samples from a population for which any given generation is made up of direct descendants from several previous generations. These occur in nature when there are seed banks or egg banks allowing an individual to leave offspring several generations in the future.

Mg–Zn composites with a thickness of 0.21 mm were fabricated using roll bonding of a kirigami‐patterned Mg alloy inlay within a Zn matrix. Thermal activation following this process led to the formation of tailored intermetallic structures, which provided the composite with enhanced flexural strength.
