Colicins and T6SS-based competition systems enhance enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) competitiveness

open access: yesGut Microbes
Diarrheal diseases are still a significant problem for humankind, causing approximately half a million deaths annually. To cause diarrhea, enteric bacterial pathogens must first colonize the gut, which is a niche occupied by the normal bacterial ...

Persistence of colicinogenic Escherichia coli in the mouse gastrointestinal tract

open access: yesBMC Microbiology, 2009
Background The ability of a bacterial strain to competitively exclude or displace other strains can be attributed to the production of narrow spectrum antimicrobials, the bacteriocins.

Preparation and Lyophilization of Colicine Suspensions. II. Lyophilization and Storage of Colicines

open access: yesPathologia et Microbiologia, 2010
Seven different types of colicines (B, D, E, K, L, X and V) were lyophilized after growth of colicinogenic E. coli in twelve liquid media and sterilization of the cultures wilh streptomycin. A total of 39 lyophilizations were carried out. With rare exceptions the litre of colicine was well maintained after lyophilization.
