Colicins - a sound antimicrobial approach for the prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections

open access: yes, 2017
The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance has created one of the greatest challenges in fighting infectious disease. We address the rise of antibiotic-resistant pathogens by examining the evolutionary history of a class of resistance determinants,

Research for colicins in shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli

open access: yes, 2017

Preparation and Lyophilization of Colicine Suspensions. II. Lyophilization and Storage of Colicines

open access: yesPathologia et Microbiologia, 2010
Seven different types of colicines (B, D, E, K, L, X and V) were lyophilized after growth of colicinogenic E. coli in twelve liquid media and sterilization of the cultures wilh streptomycin. A total of 39 lyophilizations were carried out. With rare exceptions the litre of colicine was well maintained after lyophilization.

Construction, expression and release of hybrid colicins.

open access: yes, 1991
International audienceColicins A and E1 are two pore-forming colicins sharing homology in their C-terminal domains but not in their N-terminal or central domains. Using site-directed mutagenesis, restriction sites were inserted at the proper locations to

Individual domains of colicins confer specificity in colicin uptake, in pore-properties and in immunity requirement.

open access: yes, 1991
International audienceSix different hybrid colicins were constructed by recombining various domains of the two pore-forming colicins A and E1. These hybrid colicins were purified and their properties were studied.

Uptake across the cell envelope and insertion into the inner membrane of ion channel-forming colicins in E coli

open access: yes, 1990
International audiencePore-forming colicins exert their lethal effect on E coli through formation of a voltage-dependent channel in the inner (cytoplasmic-membrane) thus destroying the energy potential of sensitive cells.

Investigating the role of lysis proteins of enzymatic colicins in bacterial competition [PDF]

open access: yes
Colicins (Cols) are plasmid-encoded toxins produced by Escherichia coli that kill other E. coli and other closely related gram-negative species. Colicins play important role in promoting microbial diversity and provide selective advantage to the ...

The long and short of colicin action: the molecular basis for the biological activity of channel-forming colicins

open access: yes, 1997
Channel-forming colicins undergo a remarkable series of conformational gyrations during their voyage from the extracellular milieu to the periplasmic membrane.

Cell entry mechanism of enzymatic bacterial colicins: Porin recruitment and the thermodynamics of receptor binding

open access: yes, 2005
Binding of enzymatic E colicins to the vitamin B-12 receptor, BtuB, is the first stage in a cascade of events that culminate in the translocation of the cytotoxic nuclease into the Escherichia coli cytoplasm and release of its tightly bound immunity ...
