Tracking epidemic viruses in wastewaters

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 17, Issue 10, October 2024.
Wastewater‐based epidemiology has emerged as a highly powerful, innovative, flexible, cost‐effective, and scalable tool for pathogen surveillance, which has been successfully used for monitoring various diseases. Abstract Classical epidemiology relies on incidence, mortality rates, and clinical data from individual testing, which can be challenging for

Comprehensive analysis of predominant pathogenic bacteria and viruses in seafood products

open access: yesComprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, Volume 23, Issue 4, July 2024.
Abstract Given the growing global demand for seafood, it is imperative to conduct a comprehensive study on the prevalence and persistence patterns of pathogenic bacteria and viruses associated with specific seafood varieties. This assessment thoroughly examines the safety of seafood products, considering the diverse processing methods employed in the ...

Diversity and Local Coadaptation of Escherichia coli and Coliphages From Small Ruminants

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2020
Bacteriophages are highly specific predators that drive bacterial diversity through coevolution while striking tradeoffs among preserving host populations for long-term exploitation and increasing their virulence, structural stability, or host range ...

Three New Escherichia coli Phages from the Human Gut Show Promising Potential for Phage Therapy. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
With the emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria the use of bacteriophages (phages) is gaining renewed interest as promising anti-microbial agents. The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize phages from human fecal samples.

Morphological features and lipopolysaccharide attachment of coliphages specific to Escherichia coli O157:H7 and to a broad range of E. coli hosts

open access: yesApplied Biological Chemistry, 2016
The objective of the present study was to analyze host-phage adsorption of bacteriophages infecting Escherichia coli O157:H7 and the other E. coli strains. Out of 55 coliphage strains, we selected seven coliphages infectious only to 23 E.

A nuclease domain fused to the Snf2 helicase confers antiphage defence in coral‐associated Halomonas meridiana

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 17, Issue 7, July 2024.
Snf2‐related helicases from corals‐associated Halomonas meridiana mediate phage defence. We have characterized a novel defence gene hmaA, which encode a nickase activity containing helicase for defence against Escherichia coli phage T4. The analysis of the hma region reveals an insertion hot spot for defence systems and predicts the presence of several

Isolation and Characterization of Lytic Coliphages from Sewage Water

open access: yesJournal of Pure and Applied Microbiology, 2017
The goal of this study was to isolate and characterize phages that might be used in transport and treatment of potential E.coli pathogen in water sources.

Isolation and characterization of a phage collection against Pseudomonas putida

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 6, June 2024.
This study presents the first collection of bacteriophages isolated specifically to act against the common laboratory strain, Pseudomonas putida PaW85. The collection comprises 67 double‐stranded DNA phages, which are classified into 22 species and 9 genera.

UV-LEDs Efficiently Inactivate DNA and RNA Coliphages

open access: yes, 2017
UV-LEDs are a new method of disinfecting drinking water. Some viruses are very resistant to UV and the efficiency of UV-LEDs to disinfect them needs to be studied.
