The Concepts of Pseudo Compound Poisson and Partition Representations in Discrete Probability

open access: yesJournal of Probability and Statistics, 2015
The mathematical/statistical concepts of pseudo compound Poisson and partition representations in discrete probability are reviewed and clarified. A combinatorial interpretation of the convolution of geometric distributions in terms of a variant of ...

SINGULARITY OF RANDOM SYMMETRIC MATRICES—A COMBINATORIAL APPROACH TO IMPROVED BOUNDS

open access: yesForum of Mathematics, Sigma, 2019
Let $M_{n}$ denote a random symmetric $n\times n$ matrix whose upper-diagonal entries are independent and identically distributed Bernoulli random variables (which take values $1$ and $-1$ with probability $1/2$ each). It is widely conjectured that $M_{n}

Interpreting the effects of DNA polymerase variants at the structural level

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Using MAVISp and molecular dynamics simulations, we analyzed over 60 000 missense variants in POLE and POLD1 from ClinVar, COSMIC, cBioPortal, and saturation mutagenesis. Identified mechanistic indicators, including stability, binding, and long‐range, enable structural interpretation, providing ACMG‐like evidence for possible reclassification of VUS ...

Numerous but rare: an exploration of magic squares. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
How rare are magic squares? So far, the exact number of magic squares of order n is only known for n ≤ 5. For larger squares, we need statistical approaches for estimating the number.

Metastasis on pause: How dormant tumor cells stay hidden within the tumor microenvironment and evade immune surveillance

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dormant cancer cells can hide in distant organs for years, evading treatment and the immune system. This review highlights how signals from the surrounding tissue and immune environment keep these cells inactive or trigger their reawakening. Understanding these mechanisms may help develop therapies to eliminate or control dormant cells and prevent ...

DNA methylation and expression of MAPRE3 affect overall survival of early‐stage non‐small cell lung cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Both cg12821679MAPRE3 methylation and MAPRE3 expression are significantly associated with overall survival (OS) of non‐small cell lung cancer. Meanwhile, MAPRE3 expression significantly modified the effect of smoking cessation on OS. Smoking cessation benefits OS merely for patients with high MAPRE3 expression.

The geometry of independence tree models with hidden variables [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In this paper we investigate the geometry of undirected discrete graphical models of trees when all the variables in the system are binary, where leaves represent the observable variables and where the inner nodes are unobserved.
