Document Review Meets Social Software and the Learning Sciences

open access: yesJe-LKS: Journal of E-Learning and Knowledge Society, 2009
This article argues that e-collaboration technologies often pose obstacles to effective communication in complex collaborative tasks. The reason presented is that typically those technologies selectively suppress face-to-face communication elements that ...

Genetic dissection of human ABCE1 in yeast reveals separable requirements for ribosome recycling and suppression of aberrant reinitiation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human ABCE1 cannot functionally replace its yeast ortholog. Yeast–human chimera analysis identified NBD1 as a major interspecies barrier. Genetic screening yielded hABCE1 revertants that rescue yeast viability but fail to suppress aberrant translation reinitiation in the 3′ UTR.

Rapid compensatory evolution can rescue low fitness symbioses following partner-switching

open access: yes, 2020
Partner-switching plays an important role in the evolution of symbiosis, enabling local adaptation and recovery from the breakdown of symbiosis. Because of intergenomic epistasis, partner-switched symbioses may possess novel combinations of phenotypes ...

Microarray and metabolome analysis of hepatic response to fasting and subsequent refeeding in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2019
Background Compensatory growth refers to the phenomenon in which organisms grow faster after the improvement of an adverse environment and is thought to be an adaptive evolution to cope with the alleviation of the hostile environment.

Muller's Ratchet and compensatory mutation in Caenorhabditis briggsae mitochondrial genome evolution

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2008
Background The theory of Muller' Ratchet predicts that small asexual populations are doomed to accumulate ever-increasing deleterious mutation loads as a consequence of the magnified power of genetic drift and mutation that accompanies small population ...

TRPML1 agonist ML‐SA5 attenuates pulmonary fibroblast activation by suppressing mTOR and restoring autophagic flux

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
TGF‐β1 stimulation downregulates lysosomal channel TRPML1 in pulmonary fibroblasts. The TRPML1 agonist ML‐SA5 suppressed fibroblast‐to‐myofibroblast activation and collagen production. Mechanistically, ML‐SA5 inhibited mTOR phosphorylation, restored autophagic flux, and its effects were enhanced by rapamycin (mTOR inhibitor) and reversed by MHY1485 ...

Elevated Connectivity During Language Processing Is Associated With Cognitive Performance in SeLECTS

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Self‐Limited Epilepsy with Centrotemporal Spikes (SeLECTS) is associated with language impairments despite seizures originating in the motor cortex, suggesting aberrant cross‐network interactions. Here we tested whether functional connectivity in SeLECTS during language tasks predicts language performance.

Disaptation and recovery in the evolution of Antarctic fishes

open access: yes, 2000
The radiation of notothenioid fishes provides an excellent system to explore issues of evolution and adaptation. Most studies emphasize adaptation to the extreme Antarctic environment; however, recent work provides cogent examples of disaptation or ...

Position-specific evolution in transcription factor binding sites, and a fast likelihood calculation for the F81 model

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science
Transcription factor binding sites (TFBS), like other DNA sequence, evolve via mutation and selection relating to their function. Models of nucleotide evolution describe DNA evolution via single-nucleotide mutation. A stationary vector of such a model is
