Complement activation in psoriasis
Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, 1990Plasma from 16 patients with psoriasis and 12 healthy control subjects were measured for iC3b, C4d, and Bb fragments generated by complement activation. Plasma concentrations for iC3b, C4d, and Bb fragments were found to be significantly increased in the patients with psoriasis.

Complement activation and atherosclerosis
Molecular Immunology, 1999Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease mediated through the action of monocyte/macrophages, complement and T-lymphocytes. C5a and monocyte chemotactic factor released during complement activation in the arterial wall may participate in the initial monocyte recruitment. Assembly of C5b-9 on cells of the arterial wall may also induce cell lysis.

Staphylococcus disrupts complement activation
Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2021This study shows that one mechanism of immune evasion used by Staphylococcus aureus involves a virulence factor, SpA, which can block complement activation by inhibiting IgG oligomerization.

Complement activation during CAPD
Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation, 1993Abstract Complement activation was monitored in 20 CAPD patients and 20 normal individuals using markers of the alternative (Bb fragment), classical (C4d fragment), common (iC3b) and terminal pathways (SC5b-9, the soluble form of the membrane attack complex, MAC), together with C3, C4 and factor B.

Biological Activities of Complement
Biochemical Society Transactions, 1978Complement is a system of serum proteins whose main function is to defend the body against infection. Although it has a reputation as a dauntingly complex system, this results chiefly from confusion in the nomenclature, which has varied considerably with time as more components were discovered, for example as ‘component C3’ became subdivided into ...

Complement Activation During Hemodialysis
Journal of Biomaterials Applications, 1989Hemodialysis, as other extracorporeal circulation treatments, determines activation of the complement system. In this paper molecular mechanism of complement activation by different hemodialysis membranes are reviewed as well as the biological consequences and clinical relevance of the ac tivation.

Complement Activation and Pregnancy Failure
Clinical Reviews in Allergy & Immunology, 2009Pregnancy represents a physiologic condition where maternal immune system tolerates the semi-allogenic fetus. The fetal tissues are directly exposed to the maternal blood with potential attacks from maternal immune system, including the activation of complement cascade. Small amounts, of both early and late components, of complement are physiologically

Complement Activation and Cardiovascular Disease
Hormone and Metabolic Research, 2008The mechanisms by which tissue injury after acute myocardial infarction occurs have not been fully elucidated, but considerable evidence suggests that activation of complement plays an important role in the pathophysiology. Reperfusion of the ischemic myocardium is strictly necessary to rescue the exposed tissue from eventual death.

Complement activation in hypercholesterolemia.
Nutrition, metabolism, and cardiovascular diseases : NMCD, 2000Inflammatory and lipid factors share an important role in atherosclerosis. This study evaluates their relations in dyslipidemic subjects. We compared the complement system (serum hemolytic activity CH50, C3 and C4 fractions and terminal complex sC5b-9) in 30 hypercholesterolemic patients with elevated cholesterol and decreased HDL-cholesterol levels, 30

Activation of complement by trypanosomes
Experientia, 1977Factors exhibiting anti-complementary activity released from trypanosomes after incubation at 20 degrees C were described. The active material was shown to consume the first component of bovine complement. While the anti-complementary factor(s) from T. lewisi could activate bovine, human and guinea pig complement, the factor(s) from T.
