Peptide redesign for inhibition of the complement system: Targeting age-related macular degeneration. [PDF]
PurposeTo redesign a complement-inhibiting peptide with the potential to become a therapeutic for dry and wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).MethodsWe present a new potent peptide (Peptide 2) of the compstatin family.

ERBIN limits epithelial cell plasticity via suppression of TGF‐β signaling
In breast and lung cancer patients, low ERBIN expression correlates with poor clinical outcomes. Here, we show that ERBIN inhibits TGF‐β‐induced epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in NMuMG breast and A549 lung adenocarcinoma cell lines. ERBIN suppresses TGF‐β/SMAD signaling and reduces TGF‐β‐induced ERK phosphorylation.

Coherent states and global entanglement in an N qubit system
We consider an $N$ qubit system and show that in the symmetric subspace, $\mathbb{S}$ a state is not globally entangled, iff it is a coherent state.

MET variants in the N‐lobe of the kinase domain, found in hereditary papillary renal cell carcinoma, require ligand stimulation to promote cell transformation, in contrast to other RTK variants. This suggests that HGF expression in the microenvironment is important for tumor growth in such patients. Their sensitivity to MET inhibitors opens the way for

Peripheral blood proteome biomarkers distinguish immunosuppressive features of cancer progression
Immune status significantly influences cancer progression. This study used plasma proteomics to analyze benign 67NR and malignant 4T1 breast tumor models at early and late tumor stages. Immune‐related proteins–osteopontin (Spp1), lactotransferrin (Ltf), calreticulin (Calr) and peroxiredoxin 2 (Prdx2)–were associated with systemic myeloid‐derived ...

Complement System and C4d expression in cases of Membranous nephropathy
Introduction: Membranous nephropathy (MN) is one of the major causes of nephrotic syndrome. The complement system plays a key role in the pathophysiology of MN.

The complex functioning of the complement system in xenotransplantation
The role of complement in xenotransplantation is well‐known and is a topic that has been reviewed previously. However, our understanding of the immense complexity of its interaction with other constituents of the innate immune response and of the ...

Transcriptome‐wide analysis of circRNA and RBP profiles and their molecular relevance for GBM
CircRNAs are differentially expressed in glioblastoma primary tumors and might serve as therapeutic targets and diagnostic markers. The investigation of circRNA and RNA‐binding proteins (RBPs) interactions shows that distinct RBPs play a role in circRNA biogenesis and function.

Targeting the complement system in bacterial meningitis
Morbidity and mortality in bacterial meningitis are driven by an uncontrolled host inflammatory response. Koelman et al. evaluate the detrimental role of the complement system in spurring this inflammation, and conclude that anaphylatoxin C5a is a ...
