Assessing shear, tensile and fracture properties of macroporous nanocomposites using the Arcan test
Macroporous polymers and nanocomposites remain popular materials due to their low densities and unique interconnected pore structures. The determination of mechanical properties in relevant loading conditions, such as shear, remains largely underexplored

On the effective permittivity of silver-insulator nanocomposites [PDF]
The Bruggeman formalism provides an estimate of the effective permittivity of a composite material comprising two constituent materials, with each constituent material being composed of electrically small particles. When one of the constituent materials is silver and the other is an insulating material, the Bruggeman estimate of the effective ...

Advanced fiber-composite hybrids--A new structural material [PDF]
Introduction of metal foil as part of matrix and fiber composite, or ""sandwich'', improves strength and stiffness for multidirectional loading, improves resistance to cyclic loading, and improves impact and erosion resistance of resultant fiber ...

The complex mode of action of the topoisomerase II inhibitor etoposide in triggering apoptosis involves several mechanisms: overexpression of the mitochondrial protein VDAC1, leading to its oligomerization and formation of a large channel that mediates the release of pro‐apoptotic protein; and overexpression of the apoptosis regulators p53, Bax, and ...

Fluorinated Polymers for Photonics—From Optical Waveguides to Polymer-Clad Glass Optical Fibers
In this paper, our work in the field of fluorinated UV-curable polymers is reviewed. These polymers possessing tunable low refractive indices and low optical propagation losses for telecommunication wavelengths are intended to be used as core and ...

Composition, structure, and luminescent properties of SiOxNy(Si) composite layers containing Si nanocrystals [PDF]
A relationship between the chemical composition, structure and luminescent properties of light-emitting SiOxNy(Si) composite layers with Si nanocrystals is demonstrated. Photoluminescence (PL) with a maximum of intensity at 500-600 nm is observed in a narrow region of chemical compositions with relatively small Si excess (about 10 at. %).

NAD+ regeneration by mitochondrial complex I NADH dehydrogenase is important for cancer cell proliferation. Specifically, NAD+ is necessary for the activities of NAD+‐dependent deacetylases SIRT3 and SIRT7, which suppress the expression of p21Cip1 cyclin‐dependent kinase inhibitor, an antiproliferative molecule, at the translational and transcriptional
