Capturing condensin in chromosomes

Nature Genetics, 2017
A new study uses a Hi-C technique to demonstrate that condensin has a major role in remodeling interphase chromatin into mitotic chromosomes. This study provides insight into the mechanism whereby a centimeters-long DNA molecule is folded into a micrometers-long rod-shaped chromosome.

Biochemical Analysis of Bacterial Condensins

2017
Condensins help establish compactness of bacterial chromosomes and assist in their segregation during cell growth and division. They act as elaborate macromolecular machines that organize the chromosome on a global scale and link it to the pan-cell dynamics. The mechanism of condensins in its entirety is yet to be elucidated.

Deciphering condensin action during chromosome segregation

Trends in Cell Biology, 2011
The correct segregation of eukaryotic genomes requires the resolution of sister DNA molecules and their movement into opposite halves of the cell before cell division. The dynamic changes chromosomes need to undergo during these events depend on the action of a multi-subunit SMC (structural maintenance of chromosomes) protein complex named condensin ...

Condensin, master organizer of the genome

Chromosome Research, 2017
A fundamental requirement in nature is for a cell to correctly package and divide its replicated genome. Condensin is a mechanical multisubunit complex critical to this process. Condensin uses ATP to power conformational changes in DNA to enable to correct DNA compaction, organization, and segregation of DNA from the simplest bacteria to humans.
