Regulation of Actin Dynamics in the C. elegans Somatic Gonad

open access: yesJournal of Developmental Biology, 2019
The reproductive system of the hermaphroditic nematode C. elegans consists of a series of contractile cell types—including the gonadal sheath cells, the spermathecal cells and the spermatheca–uterine valve—that contract in a coordinated

Dexamethasone Treatment Preserves the Structure of Adult Cardiac Explants and Supports Their Long-Term Contractility In Vitro

open access: yesInternational Journal of Translational Medicine, 2023
Normal contractile function of the myocardium is essential for optimal cardiovascular health. Evaluating drug effects on cardiomyocyte function at the cellular level is difficult for long-term studies.

Decreased myocardial injury and improved contractility after administration of a peptide derived against the alpha-interacting domain of the L-type calcium channel. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
BackgroundMyocardial infarction remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality associated with coronary artery disease. The L-type calcium channel (IC a-L) is critical to excitation and contraction.

Cardiac‐Derived ECM Microspheres for Enhanced hiPSC‐CMs Maturation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cardiac extracellular matrix microspheres derived from decellularized porcine heart provide a biomimetic 3D microenvironment for human induced pluripotent stem cell–derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC‐CMs). This platform supports short‐ and long‐term culture, enhances structural organization, and promotes electrophysiological and functional maturation of ...

Building Blood Vessels—One Rho GTPase at a Time

open access: yesCells, 2019
Blood vessels are required for the survival of any organism larger than the oxygen diffusion limit. Blood vessel formation is a tightly regulated event and vessel growth or changes in permeability are linked to a number of diseases.

HDAC Inhibition Regulates Cardiac Function by Increasing Myofilament Calcium Sensitivity and Decreasing Diastolic Tension

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2022
We recently established a large animal model that recapitulates key clinical features of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and tested the effects of the pan-HDAC inhibitor suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA).

Mechanoregulatory Effects of Cell‐Scale Microwells on Epithelial Cell Phenotype

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In small polycaprolactone microwells, A549 epithelial cells span well edges, in contrast to cells growing on flat substrates. Focal adhesion sites (yellow) concentrate at topographic boundaries, while cytoskeletal tension (magenta stress fibers) is transmitted to the nucleus (blue), reducing nuclear sphericity.

The regulation of BK channel activity by pre- and post-translational modifications

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2014
Large conductance, Ca2+-activated K+ (BK) channels represent an important pathway for the outward flux of K+ ions from the intracellular compartment in response to membrane depolarization, and/or an elevation in cytosolic free [Ca2+].

Hypercontractile Cardiac Phenotype in Mice with Migraine-Associated Mutation in the Na+,K+-ATPase α2-Isoform

open access: yesCells, 2023
Two α-isoforms of the Na+,K+-ATPase (α1 and α2) are expressed in the cardiovascular system, and it is unclear which isoform is the preferential regulator of contractility.

Sensorized Engineered Tissues with Built‐in Thermoregulation and Nutrient Supply

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces a granular hydrogel‐based tissue engineering platform that includes a closed‐loop temperature control to maintain 37°C and sustainably releases nutrients, thereby enabling cells to retain a high viability even if stored at room temperature for up to 24 h.
