Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

EWMA CHART BASED ON THE EFFECTIVE VARIANCE FOR MONITORING THE VARIABILITY OF MULTIVARIATE QUALITY CONTROL PROCESS CARTA EWMA CON VARIANZA EFECTIVA PARA MONITOREAR VARIABILIDAD EN PROCESOS DE CONTROL DE CALIDAD MULTIVARIADOS

open access: yesRevista Colombiana de Estadística, 2008
When it is of interest monitoring small changes in the variability (and/or the mean) of a process, the EWMA control charts have shown to be very efficient.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Carta EWMA con varianza efectiva para monitorear variabilidad en procesos de control de calidad multivariados EWMA Chart Based on the Effective Variance for Monitoring the Variability of Multivariate Quality Control Process

open access: yesRevista Colombiana de Estadística, 2008
Cuando se tiene interés en monitorear pequeños cambios en la variabilidad (o en la media) de un proceso, las cartas tipo EWMA han mostrado ser muy eficientes.

Monte Carlo integration with a growing number of control variates

open access: yes, 2018
The use of control variates is a well-known variance reduction tech- nique in Monte Carlo integration. If the optimal linear combination of control variates is estimated by ordinary least squares and if the num- ber of control variates is allowed to grow

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Taming Gradient Variance in Federated Learning with Networked Control Variates

open access: yes, 2023
Federated learning, a decentralized approach to machine learning, faces significant challenges such as extensive communication overheads, slow convergence, and unstable improvements.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.
