Abundances and Energy Spectra of Corotating Interaction Region Heavy Ions [PDF]

open access: yesAIP Conference Proceedings, 2008
We have surveyed He-Fe spectra for 41 Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) from 1998–2007 observed on ACE. The spectra are similar for all species, and have the form of broken power laws with the spectral break occurring at a few MeV/nucleon. Except for overabundances of He and Ne, the abundances are close to those of the solar wind.

Multi-instrument observations of polar cap patches and traveling ionospheric disturbances generated by solar wind Alfvén waves coupling to the dayside magnetosphere [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2022
During minor to moderate geomagnetic storms, caused by corotating interaction regions (CIRs) at the leading edge of high-speed streams (HSSs), solar wind Alfvén waves modulated the magnetic reconnection at the dayside magnetopause.

On acceleration of <1 MeV/n He ions in the corotating compression regions near 1 AU: STEREO observations [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2009
Observations of multi-MeV corotating interaction region (CIR) ions are in general consistent with models of CIR shock acceleration and transport. The presence of suprathermal particles near 1 AU in unshocked compression regions is not adequately ...

OBSERVATIONS OF ENERGETIC PARTICLES BETWEEN A PAIR OF COROTATING INTERACTION REGIONS [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2013
We report observations of the acceleration and trapping of energetic ions and electrons between a pair of corotating interaction regions (CIRs). The event occurred in Carrington Rotation 2060. Observed at spacecraft STEREO-B, the two CIRs were separated by less than 5 days.

Relativistic-electron dropouts and recovery: A superposed epoch study of the magnetosphere and the solar wind [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
During 124 high-speed-stream-driven storms from two solar cycles, a multispacecraft average of the 1.1–1.5 MeV electron flux measured at geosynchronous orbit is examined to study global dropouts of the flux. Solar wind and magnetospheric measurements are

A Statistical Classifier for Historical Geomagnetic Storm Drivers Derived Solely From Ground‐Based Magnetic Field Measurements

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, 2019
Solar wind observations show that geomagnetic storms are mainly driven by interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) and corotating or stream interaction regions (C/SIRs).

Development of substorm bulges during different solar wind structures [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2009
Using data from WIND spacecraft, we investigated the difference in substorm bulge development during different types of solar wind flow: solar wind recurrent streams (RS), corotating interaction regions (CIR), magnetic clouds (MC), and the region of ...

Galactic cosmic ray modulation near the heliospheric current sheet [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) are modulated by the heliospheric magnetic field (HMF) both over decadal time scales (due to long-term, global HMF variations), and over time scales of a few hours (associated with solar wind structures such as coronal mass ...

Corotating Interaction Regions and clumping [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We present hydrodynamical models for Corotating Interaction Regions, which were used by Lobel (2007) to model the Discrete Absorption Components in HD 64760. We also discuss our failure to model the rotational modulations seen in the same star.

Statistics of counter-streaming solar wind suprathermal electrons at solar minimum : STEREO observations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Previous work has shown that solar wind suprathermal electrons can display a number of features in terms of their anisotropy. Of importance is the occurrence of counter-streaming electron patterns, i.e., with "beams" both parallel and anti-parallel to ...
