Brain Organization and Human Diseases

open access: yesCells, 2022
The cortex is a highly organized structure that develops from the caudal regions of the segmented neural tube. Its spatial organization sets the stage for future functional arealization.

Vision and Cortical Map Development [PDF]

open access: yesNeuron, 2007
Functional maps arise in developing visual cortex as response selectivities become organized into columnar patterns of population activity. Recent studies of developing orientation and direction maps indicate that both are sensitive to visual experience, but not to the same degree or duration.

Nrg1 intracellular signaling regulates the development of interhemispheric callosal axons in mice

open access: yesLife Science Alliance
This study shows that the schizophrenia risk gene NRG1 controls the development of callosal connections and implicates NRG1 signaling in the regulation of GAP43, a key protein for axonal growth. Schizophrenia is associated with altered cortical circuitry.

miR-128 regulates neuronal migration, outgrowth and intrinsic excitability via the intellectual disability gene Phf6

open access: yeseLife, 2015
miR-128, a brain-enriched microRNA, has been implicated in the control of neurogenesis and synaptogenesis but its potential roles in intervening processes have not been addressed. We show that post-transcriptional mechanisms restrict miR-128 accumulation

Long Non-coding RNA T-uc.189 Modulates Neural Progenitor Cell Fate by Regulating Srsf3 During Mouse Cerebral Cortex Development

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2021
Neurogenesis is a complex process that depends on the delicate regulation of spatial and temporal gene expression. In our previous study, we found that transcribed ultra-conserved regions (T-UCRs), a class of long non-coding RNAs that contain UCRs, are ...

A new framework for nicotinic receptor-targeted therapeutic strategies in psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience
The nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are key modulators of synaptic transmission and cognitive processing within the central nervous system.

Macroanatomical Landmarks Featuring Junctions of Major Sulci and Fissures and Scalp Landmarks Based on the International 10–10 System for Analyzing Lateral Cortical Development of Infants

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2017
The topographic relationships between the macroanatomical structure of the lateral cortex, including sulci and fissures, and anatomical landmarks on the external surface of the head are known to be consistent.

Cortical Development: New Concepts [PDF]

open access: yesNeuron, 2005
Progress in understanding development of the cerebral cortex has made significant leaps in recent years in areas including neurogenesis, fate determination, migration, and differentiation—all finally culminating in the establishment of cortical architecture and circuitry.

The function of Mef2c toward the development of excitatory and inhibitory cortical neurons

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience
Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) are caused by abnormal brain development, leading to altered brain function and affecting cognition, learning, self-control, memory, and emotion.

The ubiquitylome of developing cortical neurons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Abstract TRIM9 and TRIM67 are neuronally-enriched E3 ubiquitin. Both genes are required for neuronal morphological responses to the axon guidance cue netrin-1. For example, our previously published work demonstrated that the actin polymerase VASP and the netrin receptor DCC exhibit TRIM9 dependent ubiquitylation that is lost upon netrin
