Empirical assessment of feeding and husbandry challenges between early-separation and cow-calf contact rearing systems in southern Germany

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science
: The interest in rearing dairy calves within cow-calf contact (CCC) systems, allowing full (all calves) and partial (some calves) contact, is increasing, driven by growing societal criticism of the early separation of cow and calf after birth.

Chilean Dolphins (Cephalorhynchus eutropia) Produce Both Narrowband High‐Frequency and Broadband Clicks

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 4, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Most dolphin species produce broadband biosonar clicks for echolocating prey, and whistles and burst‐pulsed calls for communication purposes. Seven dolphin species were previously reported to only produce clicks of a narrowband high‐frequency (NBHF) type, very similar to the clicks produced by porpoises.

‘Becoming With’ on the Dairy Farm: A Post‐Humanist Inquiry Into More‐Than‐Human Socialisation and Agency

open access: yesSociologia Ruralis, Volume 66, Issue 4, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Literature has described dairy cows as both passive objects and active participants in the milk production process. This study explores how this passivity and activity co‐exist through an inquiry into dairy cow agency within a post‐anthropocentric conceptualisation of socialisation theories.

Safety and efficacy of a feed additive consisting of cocoa absolute from the dried seeds of Theobroma cacao L. in propylene glycol for use in all animal species except cats (FEFANA asbl)

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 24, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of a feed additive consisting of a preparation of cocoa absolute (obtained by ■■■■■ extraction from the dried seeds of Theobroma cacao L.) in propylene glycol when used as a sensory additive in feed and water for drinking

Comparing the effects of contact duration on cow and calf performance beyond separation - a prospective cohort study

open access: yesActa Veterinaria Scandinavica
Background Consumers, the industry, and many farmers have shown increased interest in alternative management systems that allow for cow-calf contact (CCC) and this topic has become an important focus of research for a sustainable dairy industry.

Assessment of current colostrum feeding practices and passive transfer of immunity in dairy herds in Great Britain: A cross‐sectional study

open access: yesVeterinary Record, Volume 199, Issue 6, Page e262-e271, 19/26 September 2026.
Abstract Background Updated targets for measuring transfer of passive immunity (TPI) at the herd level have been suggested, but the current performance of dairy herds in Great Britain is unknown. Methods A cross‐sectional study was performed. Serum total protein (STP) data collected between October 2022 and October 2023 by 21 veterinary practices were ...

Duration of dam contact had a long effect on calf rumen microbiota without affecting growth

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science
IntroductionSeparating calves from their mothers at birth is linked to calf welfare issues and disturbances in the mother-calf relationship. It can also disrupt the maturation of the digestive tract, affecting calf health.

Investigating Dietary microRNA Stability and Function Using a Transgenic Milk Model With Unique microRNA Sequences

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 40, Issue 17, 15 September 2026.
Upon ingestion, milk extracellular vesicles (EVs) carrying bioactive cargo such as microRNAs may survive digestion and remain bioactive. Here, milk from wild‐type and transgenic cows expressing unique microRNAs was used to isolate and characterize four EV populations.

Methodology for experimental and observational animal studies in cow-calf contact systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
In this Research Reflection we describe a common standpoint on suitable methodology for controlled and observational studies in cow-calf contact systems in dairy production. Different methods to assess behaviour, health and production in cow-calf contact
