Cowpox virus virulence determinants
New cowpox virus (CPXV) infections occur naturally in Germany in increasing numbers. It is striking that an infection of the pet rats with these newly occurring CPXV strains often leads to a lethal outcome. Likewise, a CPXV isolate from a pet rat that as well caused human infection in Southern Germany, RatPox09, causes severe disease in Wistar rats ...

Complex Approach to Species-Specific Detection of Cowpox Virus
Objective of the study is to develop and validate the method for species-specific detection of cowpox virus (CPV). Materials and methods. Utilized were oligonucleotide primers and fluorescence-labeled probes for genus-specific detection of ...

Morphology of deoxyribonucleic acid extracted from cores of vaccinia virus [PDF]
It has been shown recently that the outer layers of vaccinia virions can be removed selectively under mild conditions to yield a preparation that consists entirely of "cores" (K. B. Easterbrook, Ultrastruct. Res. 14:484, 1966).

Intrabronchial inoculation of cynomolgus macaques with cowpox virus
The public health threat of orthopoxviruses from bioterrorist attacks has prompted researchers to develop suitable animal models for increasing our understanding of viral pathogenesis and evaluation of medical countermeasures (MCMs) in compliance with the FDA Animal Efficacy Rule.

Study of Vaccinia and Cowpox viruses' replication in Rac1-N17 dominant-negative cells
Interfering with cellular signal transduction pathways is a common strategy used by many viruses to create a propitious intracellular environment for an efficient replication.

Camelpox virus encodes a schlafen-like protein that affects orthopoxvirus virulence. [PDF]
Camelpox virus (CMLV) gene 176R encodes a protein with sequence similarity to murine schlafen (m-slfn) proteins. In vivo, short and long members of the m-slfn family inhibited T-cell development, whereas in vitro, only short m-slfns caused arrest of ...

Genetic diversity of feline cowpox virus, Germany 2000–2008
Recent cowpox virus (CPXV) infections of humans in Europe transmitted from cats and pet rats have risen public awareness of this rare zoonosis. Based on serosurveys wild rodents are regarded as primary reservoir hosts. Cats can become infected while hunting and could therefore serve as a sentinel for CPXV strains circulating in wild rodents.
