Neuronal hyperexcitability: A key to unraveling hippocampal synaptic dysfunction in Lafora disease

open access: yesEpilepsia, Volume 67, Issue 3, Page 1449-1468, March 2026.
Abstract Background and Objective Lafora disease (LD) is a rare progressive disorder caused by mutations in the EPM2A or EPM2B genes, characterized by the accumulation of Lafora bodies, drug‐resistant epilepsy, and cognitive decline. To investigate the early molecular mechanisms of LD, we studied electrophysiological changes in the dentate gyrus (DG ...

Transcriptional regulation of human NMNAT2: insights from 3D genome sequencing and bioinformatics

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 5, Page 1433-1458, March 2026.
NMNAT2 is a valuable drug target, as low levels increase the risk of neurodegeneration. We employed 4C‐seq to identify NMNAT2 regulatory regions in the human genome, revealing distinct interactomes of the NMNAT2 promoter in undifferentiated and neuron‐like SH‐SY5Y cells. Additionally, we uncovered NMNAT2‐associated genes and transcription factors. This

Neuroprotective Effects of Strength Training on Behavioral Deficit, Oxidative Damage, Astrogliosis, and Neuronal Death in a Bipolar Disorder Model

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 170, Issue 3, March 2026.
Schematic representation of the neuroprotective effects of strength training in an ouabain‐induced model of bipolar disorder. The intracerebroventricular injection of ouabain induces behavioral alterations (manic‐ and depressive‐like behaviors and cognitive deficits), increases oxidative stress (↑reactive species, ↓antioxidant defenses), promotes ...

Engram Synapses and Synapse Dynamics in Memory Processing

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 170, Issue 3, March 2026.
Learning‐induced neuronal activity dynamically rewires synapses, altering their formation and elimination rates in task‐related regions. In vivo two‐photon imaging has revealed that activity‐driven presynaptic, postsynaptic, and astrocytic mechanisms regulate synaptogenesis and axonal bouton engulfment.
