Statins-More Than Just Plaque Stabilisation

open access: yesIndian Journal of Anaesthesia, 2008
Hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase inhibitors, better known as statins have come a long way in the recent years, not just in perioperative cardiac protection but also as potential agents for the critically ill patient in intensive care.

Population pharmacokinetics of intravenous daptomycin in critically ill patients: implications for selection of dosage regimens

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology
Daptomycin is gaining prominence for the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections. However, the dosage selection for daptomycin in critically ill patients remains uncertain, especially in Chinese patients.

Transcriptional regulation of neuropeptide receptors underlies context‐dependent adaptation in Drosophila melanogaster

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Under environmental changes, the expression level of neuropeptide (NP) and neuropeptide receptor (NPR) genes changes to confer context‐dependent adaptation to the model organism Drosophila melanogaster. Through finding more regulatory elements in the NPR genes in comparison with their ligands (NPs), we found that NPR‐biased transcriptional regulation ...

A unified model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy gene involvement in cancer: context‐dependent tumour suppression and oncogenicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We propose a context‐dependent model where the Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) gene acts as a tumour suppressor in aggressive tumours and as an oncogene in less aggressive ones. We propose this model as a unified framework to explain the opposing survival associations with DMD expression and to guide experimental exploration of the dual role of DMD ...

Measuring Cardiac Output in the Critically Ill [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
__Abstract__ Haemodynamic monitoring plays an essential part on the care of the critically ill patient. Monitoring has two goals; the first goal is a signalling function if the patients clinical condition improves or deteriorates adequate measures can

Structural and functional characterization of chitinase from carnivorous plant Drosera adelae

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
A class I chitinase from the carnivorous plant Drosera adelae was expressed and purified using a yeast system, revealing high enzymatic activity. Structural analyses of the catalytic and chitin‐binding domains identified key tyrosine residues involved in substrate binding, offering insights into the enzyme's adaptation for insect digestion.

Chrononutrition in Critical Illness

open access: yesNutrition Reviews
Abstract Circadian rhythms in humans are biological rhythms that regulate various physiological processes within a 24-hour time frame. Critical illness can disrupt the circadian rhythm, as can environmental and clinical factors, including altered light exposure, organ replacement therapies, disrupted sleep–wake cycles, noise, continuous ...
