Latent virus infections in Crocus sativus and Crocus cartwrightianus
2011In over two decades, while studying saffron reproductive biology, we frequently found ultrastructural alterations typical of potyvirus infection in stigmas, styles and leaves of Crocus sativus (saffron) and C. cartwrightianus (wild and ornamental species, a putative ancestor of saffron) from different provenance.

Induction of Hysteranthy in the Saffron Crocus (Crocus sativus L.)
1988The saffron crocus (Crocus sativus L.), a sterile cultivated geophyte, is propagated by annual replacement corms for the red stigmatic lobes that constitute, after drying, the saffron spice. C. sativus is a sub-hysteranthous species, i.e., it blooms in autumn shortly after planting, before, with or after leaf appearance.
