Howard Hughes Medical Institute 2013 Year in Review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute is the nation's largest private supporter of academic biomedical research. As a medical research organization, the Institute spends at least 3.5 percent of its endowment each year on research activities and related ...

Protocol for the purification of replisomes from the Xenopus laevis egg extract system for single-particle cryo-EM analysis

open access: yesSTAR Protocols
Summary: Here, we present a large-scale FLAG immunoprecipitation protocol to isolate large protein complexes driving DNA replication at replicating chromatin assembled in Xenopus laevis egg extract.

Advances in Structure Modeling Methods for Cryo-Electron Microscopy Maps

open access: yesMolecules, 2019
Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has now become a widely used technique for structure determination of macromolecular complexes. For modeling molecular structures from density maps of different resolutions, many algorithms have been developed.

An assessment of the resolution limitation due to radiation-damage in x-ray diffraction microscopy

open access: yes, 2005
X-ray diffraction microscopy (XDM) is a new form of x-ray imaging that is being practiced at several third-generation synchrotron-radiation x-ray facilities.

Cryoelectron microscopy of low density lipoprotein in vitreous ice

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 1995
In this report, images of low density lipoprotein (LDL) in vitreous ice at approximately 30 A resolution are presented. These images show that LDL is a quasi-spherical particle, approximately 220-240 A in diameter, with a region of low density (lipid) surrounded by a ring (in projection) of high density believed to represent apolipoprotein B-100.

Placental Extracellular Vesicles Exhibit Reduced Neurogenic Potential Linked to Changes in Their miRNA Landscape Upon HCMV Infection

open access: yesJournal of Extracellular Biology, Volume 5, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are key mediators of maternal–foetal communication, regulating placental function and foetal development through the transfer of bioactive molecules. Although placental EVs play a crucial role in placental function during pregnancy, their contribution to foetal development, notably foetal brain, remains poorly ...

Exploring the protein universe with distant similarity detection methods

open access: yesProtein Science, Volume 35, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract During the last few years, the body of data on proteins is expanding almost exponentially with the development of advanced methods for gene sequencing, protein structure determination, particularly by cryoelectron microscopy, and structure prediction using artificial intelligence‐based approaches.

Cryo-EM and cryo-ET reveal the molecular architecture and host interactions of mycobacteriophage Douge

open access: yesCell Reports
Summary: Recent reports highlight the efficacy of engineered mycobacteriophages to treat non-tuberculosis mycobacterial disease. Molecular insights into mycobacteriophage architecture and host interactions could allow structure-guided phage engineering ...

A Critical Evaluation of Nano‐ and Microplastics: Sources, Health Risks, and Mitigation Strategies

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Microplastics (1 μm–5 mm) and nanoplastics (< 1 μm) have become ubiquitous contaminants across air, water, and soil systems, with growing evidence of their presence in human tissues including blood, lungs, and even the placenta. While microplastics have been extensively studied, nanoplastics remain poorly understood because of their minute size and ...

Symmetry-guided nonrigid registration: the case for distortion correction in multidimensional photoemission spectroscopy

open access: yes, 2019
Image symmetrization is an effective strategy to correct symmetry distortion in experimental data for which symmetry is essential in the subsequent analysis.
