Enzyme activity of cryoprotected myocardium
Cryobiology, 1976Abstract The use of in vivo intravenously infused DMSO/glycerol in Krebs-Henseleit buffer solution as a cryoprotectant in rat left ventricles was investigated. Alkaline phosphatase and creatine phosphokinase activities were monitored. Data show inhibition of alkaline phosphatase by the cryoprotectant solution.

Biochemistry of Cryoprotectants
1991The role of polyhydric alcohols in cryoprotection is probably the most extensively studied feature of insect cold hardiness. The importance of glycerol as a cryoprotectant was first recognized by R. W. Salt after he and others linked the presence of high levels of glycerol with winter hibernation, diapause, or freezing survival (Salt, 1957, 1959, 1961;

Cold-adapted organisms are known to accumulate cryoprotective substances inside their cells. Glycine betaine is a bacterial cryoprotectant. It is believed to act by stabilizing cellular proteins and membranes at low temperature.

On the mechanism of cryoprotection by polyethylene oxide
Cryobiology, 1976Abstract Bone marrow cells and peripheral blood leukocytes have been exposed to a 15% solution of polyethylene oxide of molecular weight 400 (PEO-400) and the effect on DNA synthesis, oxygen uptake, and the activity of oxidative-reductive enzymes has been studied.

Cryoprotectants for frozen red meats
Meat Science, 1998This present research explores the sensory characteristics of several cryoprotectant carbohydrates that could be added to frozen red meat. The cryoprotectants were sucrose, dsorbitol, maltodextrin DE 24-38 and synthetic polydextrose. The sweetness of aqueous solutions of sorbitol, maltodextrin and polydextrose was compared to standard 0.8% sucrose ...

Cryoprotectant-treated myocardium evaluation
Cryobiology, 1976Whole excis ed rat hearts were treated with 5, 10, or 15% (v/v) dimethyl sulfoxide/glycerol and then some were frozen in liquid nitrogen while the balance remained unfrozen. Freezing and thawing rates were approximately 30degreesC/min. Ventricular tissue was examined for histological damage, glycogen depletion, and enzyme sites, using histological ...

Analysis of the permeation of cryoprotectants in cartilage
Cryobiology, 2007Some tissues, such as cartilage and cornea, carry an internal fixed negative charge, leading to a swelling pressure that is balanced by tensile stress in the tissue matrix. During the addition and removal of cryoprotectants the changes in osmotic pressure will cause the tissue to deform.

Cryoprotectants and cryoprotective effect in cryopreservation of gamete cells
2007Gamet hücrelerinin dondurulmasında kullanılan koruyucu maddeler (kryoprotektanlar) soğuk şoku ve donma esnasında gelişen diğer hasarlara karşı koruma sağlarlar. Kryoprotektanların hücrede toksik etkiye sahip olmaları, bu maddeler üzerindeki çalışmaları yoğunlaştırmış, ortama katılan eksternal kryoprotektanlarla, toksik etkimeler azaltılmaya ...

The mechanism of cryoprotection of proteins by solutes
Cryobiology, 1988We have tested the capacity of 28 different compounds to protect lactate dehydrogenase from damage during freeze-thawing. These solutes come from very dissimilar chemical classes including sugars, polyols, amino acids, methylamines, and lyotropic salts.

Cryoprotection in hearts as measured by CPK
Cryobiology, 1973Abstract Rat hearts were treated with a cryoprotectant solution composed of glycerol and DMSO in concentrations ranging from 10–25% v v , and then frozen in liquid nitrogen. Creatine phosphokinase activity was then measured spectrophotometrically and activities were compared with activities of frozen-untreated hearts, unfrozen-treated hearts ...
