Structure and non-essential function of glycerol kinase in Plasmodium falciparum blood stages [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Malaria pathology is caused by multiplication of asexual parasites within erythrocytes, whereas mosquito transmission of malaria is mediated by sexual precursor cells (gametocytes).

Aptamer-Facilitated Cryoprotection of Viruses [PDF]

open access: yesACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters, 2014
Global vaccination and gene therapy programs have an urgent demand for stabilization of viral vectors at low temperature. We used a quadramer, a bridge-connected DNA tetra-aptamer to antivesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), as a viral cryoprotectant. Results showed that the tetravalent antivirus DNA aptamers protect viral activity during multiple freeze ...

Next‐Generation Bio‐Reducible Lipids Enable Enhanced Vaccine Efficacy in Malaria and Primate Models

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Structure–activity relationship (SAR) optimization of bio‐reducible ionizable lipids enables the development of highly effective lipid nanoparticle (LNP) mRNA vaccines. Lead LNPs show superior tolerability and antibody responses in rodents and primates, outperforming approved COVID‐19 vaccine lipids.

Role of Cryoprotectants in Preventing Quality Loss of Goat Oocytes after Warming by Examining Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 and Bone Morphogenetic Protein-15 Expression

open access: yesJurnal Medik Veteriner
This research aimed to assess the efficacy of ethylene glycol-sucrose as an alternative cryoprotectant compared to commercial cryoprotectants by focusing on the expression of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and bone morphogenetic protein-15 (BMP-15)

The Space Within: How Architected Voids Promote Tissue Formation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review explores the role of void spaces in tissue engineering scaffolds and examines four key methods for introducing porosity into hydrogels at different scales. It discusses sacrificial templating, microgels, phase separation, and 3D printing, highlighting principles, advantages, and limitations. It also addresses emerging strategies integrating

Implications of storage and handling conditions on glass transition and potential devitrification of oocytes and embryos [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Devitrification, the process of crystallization of a formerly crystal-free, amorphous glass state, can lead to damage during the warming of cells.

The Vegan Villain Sets Out to The End of Summer: Functionalized Coatings as Biohybrid UV‐Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
This study introduces biohybrid coatings incorporating E. coli biomass expressing photoconvertible fluorescent proteins as UV‐A responsive elements. Upon irradiation at 400 nm, the coatings exhibit an irreversible fluorescence shift from green to red within 15 min. Notably, the photoconversion capability is retained after >1 year of storage.
