The Content of Dietary Melatonin in 119 Food Items and Its Relationship With Chronic Diseases: Results of the CUME+ Study. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Hum Nutr Diet
ABSTRACT Background Dietary melatonin, naturally occurring in plant‐ and animal‐based foods, has been linked to beneficial effects on sleep, mood and metabolic health. Although evidence suggests that food‐derived melatonin may elevate circulating levels, few studies have assessed its intake through habitual diets or explored associations with chronic ...

Biocultural Determinants of Mothers' Complementary Feeding Decisions in the Urban Brazilian Amazon. [PDF]

open access: yesAm J Hum Biol
ABSTRACT Objective Complementary feeding (CF) occurs during a critical period of infant growth and development with life‐long health implications. Despite international efforts, there remains significant variation in the adequacy of complementary diets across settings. In Brazil, there is marked variation in adherence to CF guidelines and infant growth

Attractive Sugar Bait Formulation for Development of Attractive Toxic Sugar Bait for Control of Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus). [PDF]

open access: yesJ Trop Med, 2022
Background. Attractive toxic sugar bait (ATSB), based on “attract and kill” approach, is a novel and promising strategy for mosquito control. Formulation of an attractive sugar bait (ASB) solution by selecting an efficient olfaction stimulant and preparation of an optimized sugar‐attractant dosage is a significant component for the success of the ...

The distribution of bushmeat mammals in unflooded forests of the Central Amazon is influenced by poaching proxies

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 12, December 2023., 2023
Our study focuses on investigating the impact of anthropogenic factors on the occupancy of medium and large mammals in unflooded forests of the Central Amazon. Through a camera trapping survey conducted across 47 sampling sites during the dry season, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the influence of anthropogenic stressors on mammal occupancy ...

Wild or Introduced? Investigating the Genetic Landscape of Cacao Populations in South America. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Cacao populations span a continuum from wild to domesticated forms, shaped by complex patterns of human influence and selection. Using RAD‐sequencing, we show that native Upper Amazonian populations harbor the highest genetic diversity, while the Guiana group likely represents an isolated wild lineage and Amelonado shows clear signals of artificial ...

Exploration of agricultural residue ash as a solid green heterogeneous base catalyst for biodiesel production

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 5, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
Transesterification of vegetable oils with homogeneous catalyst for biodiesel synthesis is considered to have a promising future, but it is nonrenewable and hazardous. High production cost, in terms of feedstock oil and catalyst acquisition is one of the major challenges facing the global commercialization of biodiesel.

Beyond Carbon: The Contributions of South American Tropical Humid and Subhumid Forests to Ecosystem Services

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 60, Issue 4, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Tropical forests are recognized for their role in providing diverse ecosystem services (ESs), with carbon uptake the best recognized. The capacity of tropical forests to provide ESs is strongly linked to their enormous biodiversity. However, causal relationships between biodiversity and ESs are poorly understood.

Diversity and Activity Patterns of Medium-Sized and Large Terrestrial Mammals in Agroforests of a Peruvian Amazon Rainforest Region. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We studied species richness and activity patterns of medium‐sized and large terrestrial mammals in agroforests located in the northern buffer zone of Tambopata National Reserve, Peru. The agroforests harboured a high number of mammal species, with species richness increasing alongside greater structural complexity of vegetation.

Science‐based planning can support law enforcement actions to curb deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon

open access: yesConservation Letters, Volume 15, Issue 6, November/December 2022., 2022
Abstract While Brazil publicly committed to reduce deforestation in Amazonia at the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26), the Brazilian parliament is moving toward weakening environmental laws. Deforestation rates continue ascending, reaching in 2021 the highest value since 2006 (13,235 km2). To overcome this paradox, strategies to curb deforestation

Testing for functional significance of traits: Effect of the light environment in tropical tree saplings

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 11, Issue 11, Page 6480-6492, June 2021., 2021
Light availability changes both trait–trait and trait–growth relations.Crown traits have a stronger effect on growth rates in understory.Physiological traits have a stronger effect on growth rates in gap. Abstract Functional traits have been examined to explain the growth rates of forest communities in different sites.
