Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Classification and Fractal Characteristics of Limestone Fragments Obtained in Conventional Compression and Cyclic Loading Tests under Uniaxial and Triaxial Conditions

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, 2020
The mechanical response characteristics of rocks under cyclic loading conditions are crucial factors for evaluating and analyzing the stability of rock mass during underground excavation. In this study, based on fractal theory and a series of tests using

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Experimental Study on Mechanical Properties of Deep Buried Granite under Different Confining Pressures

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2020
Brittle failure of hard rock poses a serious threat to the stability of surrounding rock in deep underground engineering. In order to study the deformation and failure characteristics of deep buried granite under high confining pressure cyclic loading ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Mechanism of Micro and Macro Mechanics in Brittle Rocks During Cyclic Creep Under High Seepage Pressure

open access: yes工程科学与技术, 2023
Cyclic creep mechanical properties of brittle rock under the combined influence of high seepage pressure, confining pressure, and cyclic axial loading and unloading are of great significance to the stability evaluation of surrounding rock in deep ...

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Hydromechanical Coupling Characteristics of the Fractured Sandstone under Cyclic Loading-Unloading

open access: yesGeofluids, 2020
The mechanical and hydraulic properties of rock mass play a crucial role in underground engineering. To study the effect of hydraulic pressure, confining pressure, and axial cyclic loading-unloading on variation of the deformation and permeability in ...
