Revisiting the action spectrum of DNA damage: Chemiexcitation and the expanded biological spectrum of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer formation

Photochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
UVB and UVA generate cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) during irradiation (purple). After exposure ends, chemiexcitation in pigmented melanocytes continues to generate delayed CPDs (yellow), even as repair removes some pre‐existing lesions. Consequently, total CPD burden can rise while visible erythema fades.
