The Regulation of Trace Metal Elements in Cancer Ferroptosis

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
The induction of ferroptosis inhibits tumor growth, enhances anticancer efficacy, and overcomes drug resistance. Recent evidence shows nonferrous metal elements play a role in ferroptosis. This review focuses on how trace metals regulate ferroptosis processes like iron accumulation, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant defense.

Removal of Cysteine (an Aliphatic Amino Acid) by Natural Clinoptilolite [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, 2011
Amino acids have been extensively used in several processes of the pharmaceutical and food industries. Treatments for the recovery and reuse of the wastewaters generated from these processes are few and little known.

Detection of Homocysteine and Cysteine

open access: yesJournal of the American Chemical Society, 2005
At elevated levels, homocysteine (Hcy, 1) is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer's disease, neural tube defects, and osteoporosis. Both 1 and cysteine (Cys, 3) are linked to neurotoxicity. The biochemical mechanisms by which 1 and 3 are involved in disease states are relatively unclear.

Maillard Type Reaction for Electroless Copper Plating onto Ceramic Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents the manufacturing of copper‐plated ceramic nanoparticles in an environmentally friendly way. Supported by organic functionalizations with pectin an electroless plating step can be performed. Sustainable reagents like xylose, and several amino acids are used for the reduction process.

Isolation and expression analysis of transcripts encoding metallothioneins in oil palm

open access: yesBiologia Plantarum, 2014
Two of the abundant transcripts encoding type 2 metallothionein (MT) proteins designated as MET2a and MET2b were selected in our previous study due to their high abundance (16.05 %) in the suppression subtractive hybridization library and their ...

Ultra‐Effective Light‐Activated Antibacterial Activity via Carboxyl Functionalized Graphene Quantum Dots and Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Carboxyl‐functionalized graphene quantum dots (cGQDs) exhibit high singlet oxygen quantum yield due to strong spin–orbit coupling. cGQDs achieve minimum bactericidal concentration of only 0.4 µg mL−1 against S. aureus under low‐intensity illumination.

Biofilm Control by Active Topography with Mucin Coating

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study reports a new antifouling strategy based on a bioinspired design. Mucin coating enhances biofilm control by active topography with beating micron‐sized pillars. Besides the mechanical force of beating pillars, the antibiofilm activities also involve biological factors since mucin coating inhibits swarming motility and c‐di‐GMP synthesis in ...

Comparing the effect of using normal saline, N-acetyl cysteine and not using them in endotracheal tube suction on physiologic parameters and the amount of secretions in intubated patients under mechanical ventilation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Aims: Today a large number of patients hospitalized in Intensive Care Unit need mechanical ventilation via an artificial air way. Since these patients have endotracheal tube, endotracheal suctioning is necessary for increasing oxygenation, cleaning the ...

Multifunctional Hydroxyapatite Coated with Gallium Liquid Metal‐Based Silver Nanoparticles for Infection Prevention and Bone Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A multifunctional hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating integrated with silver‐gallium liquid metal nanoparticles (HAp‐Ag‐GaNPs) exhibits dual antibacterial and osteogenic properties. It effectively inhibits Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative bacteria, including resistant strains, while enhancing bone regeneration.
