Cystine Crystalluria and Urinary Saturation in Cystine and Non-Cystine Stone Formers
Journal of Urology, 1981It has been suggested recently that the first step in the formation of calcium oxalate stones appears to be crystallisation. This step is said to depend on the state of saturation of the urine. This hypothesis was checked in cystine stone formers. Cystine crystalluria was found in 83% of 24 urine samples from cystine stone formers (CSF) but in one of ...

Cystinuria is a rare etiology of nephroliathiasis but must be considered in the pediatric population and in those patients with recurrent nephrolithiasis. We describe a patient with an unusually large cystine stone burden and our successful multimodality therapy.

We report on 9 patients, 5 men and 4 women, with cystine stones. Eight were seen previously at other hospitals, and a total of 18 operations were performed for stones before the diagnosis of cystinuria was made and medical treatment instituted. The pathogenesis and rational for medical treatment is reviewed, and the need for early diagnosis is ...

Abstract The appearances of a cystine kidney stone undergoing dissolution therapy suggested the presence of calcium salts. Contaminants in cystine urinary stones have been investigated by X-ray crystallography. Of 29 stones, four contained sufficient insoluble material to present problems in therapy.

Recent reports of the crystal structure of the glycoprotein hormone human chorionic gonadotrophin show that cystine knots are proving to be versatile structural motifs that enable the construction of a variety of proteins with different functional properties.
