Knowledge transfer for surgical activity prediction [PDF]
Lack of training data hinders automatic recognition and prediction of surgical activities necessary for situation-aware operating rooms. We propose using knowledge transfer to compensate for data deficit and improve prediction. We used two approaches to extract and transfer surgical process knowledge.

m2caiSeg: Semantic Segmentation of Laparoscopic Images using Convolutional Neural Networks [PDF]
Autonomous surgical procedures, in particular minimal invasive surgeries, are the next frontier for Artificial Intelligence research. However, the existing challenges include precise identification of the human anatomy and the surgical settings, and modeling the environment for training of an autonomous agent.

Real-time Surgical Tools Recognition in Total Knee Arthroplasty Using Deep Neural Networks [PDF]
Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a commonly performed surgical procedure to mitigate knee pain and improve functions for people with knee arthritis. The procedure is complicated due to the different surgical tools used in the stages of surgery. The recognition of surgical tools in real-time can be a solution to simplify surgical procedures for the ...

Pure abscopal effect in a patient with advanced uterine carcinosarcoma
The abscopal effect is a rare phenomenon, in which tumor shrinkage in the nonirradiated metastatic region is observed after radiotherapy. Certainly, this response is sometimes reported with the combined use of immune-checkpoint inhibitors, but a pure ...

A Formal Approach For Modelling And Analysing Surgical Procedures (Extended Version) [PDF]
Surgical procedures are often not "standardised" (i.e., defined in a unique and unambiguous way), but rather exist as implicit knowledge in the minds of the surgeon and the surgical team. This reliance extends to pre-surgery planning and effective communication during the procedure. We introduce a novel approach for the formal and automated analysis of

Surgical Activity Recognition in Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy using Deep Learning [PDF]
Adverse surgical outcomes are costly to patients and hospitals. Approaches to benchmark surgical care are often limited to gross measures across the entire procedure despite the performance of particular tasks being largely responsible for undesirable outcomes.

Leveraging Surgical Activity Grammar for Primary Intention Prediction in Laparoscopy Procedures [PDF]
Surgical procedures are inherently complex and dynamic, with intricate dependencies and various execution paths. Accurate identification of the intentions behind critical actions, referred to as Primary Intentions (PIs), is crucial to understanding and planning the procedure.
