The Role of Oxidative Stress in Periodontitis

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
Oxidative stress is involved in multiple chemical reactions that take place in different intracellular organelles: mitochondria, rough endoplasmic reticulum, peroxisomes, autophagy, and aging, and can be influenced by exogenous factors: nutrition, physical activity, psychological status, environmental conditions, microbiome, and drugs.

Epigenetic Regulation in the Pathogenesis of Periodontitis

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
The aim of this narrative literature review was to identify epigenetic marks associated with periodontitis and to place them in a biological context. The literature was reviewed based on pre‐defined criteria. Cell type specific chromatin and mRNA modifications were included.

Cytosine methylation flags mitochondrial RNA for degradation

open access: yesTrends in Biochemical Sciences
Mitochondrial double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) can form spontaneously in mitochondria, blocking mitochondrial gene expression and triggering an immune response. A recent study by Kim, Tan, et al. identified a safeguard mechanism in which NOP2/Sun RNA methyltransferase 4 (NSUN4)-mediated RNA methylation (m5C) recruits the RNA degradation machinery to prevent

Accurate Detection of Methylated Cytosine in Complex Methylation Landscapes

open access: yes, 2016
Monitoring DNA methylation can be a useful biomarker for disease diagnosis and prognosis. However, monitoring the methylation status of a specific cytosine biomarker is often confounded by heterogeneous peripheral DNA methylation.

Beyond Deterministic Fetal Programming: Intrauterine Exposures and the Multifactorial Origins of Adiposity

open access: yesObesity Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Excess adiposity is not a recently developed problem but has existed since at least the upper Paleolithic, allowing evolutionary selection pressures to adapt the physiology of the pregnant woman and the feto‐placental unit for maternal and fetal protection.

DNA Methylation Shapes Seed‐Borne Microbiome and Proteome Responses During Early Maize‐Beneficial Bacteria Interactions

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Microorganism and plant interactions are crucial for development and environmental adaptation. Plant growth promoting bacteria enhance agricultural productivity in a sustainable manner, while epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation regulate gene expression and adaptive responses.
