Biological activities of ethanolic extracts from deep-sea antarctic marine sponges

open access: yes, 2013
We report on the screening of ethanolic extracts from 33 deep-sea Antarctic marine sponges for different biological activities. We monitored hemolysis, inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, cytotoxicity towards normal and transformed cells and growth ...

Artemisinin-Derivative-NHC-gold(I)-Hybrid with Enhanced Cytotoxic Activity Through Inhibiting NRF2 Transcriptional Activity

open access: yes, 2020
A family of original bis(artemisinin-NHC)gold(I) complexes have been synthesized. These hybrid molecules combine two biological active motifs, an artemisinin derivative (DHA) and a cationic bis(NHC)gold(I) unit.

Proteasomal degradation of intracellularly expressed Amblyomin‐X limits suicide gene therapy potential in melanoma cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study explores the feasibility of expressing the antitumoral protein Amblyomin‐X through a suicide gene therapy approach and investigates its intracellular fate after gene delivery. Although the gene is efficiently expressed, melanoma cells rapidly degrade the Amblyomin‐X protein via proteasome activity.

Combined 5‐aminolevulinic acid and ferric ammonium citrate treatment promotes hair follicle growth by activating dermal papilla cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
5‐Aminolevulinic acid combined with ferric ammonium citrate (5‐ALA/FAC) stimulates dermal papilla cell activity and promotes hair follicle growth. The treatment enhances ERK and AKT signaling, increases hair‐inductive gene expression, and restores dermal papilla function suppressed by dihydrotestosterone and oxidative stress, resulting in enhanced hair

Evidence of HIV-1 adaptation to HLA-restricted immune responses at a population level

open access: yes, 2002
Selection of HIV-1 variants resistant to antiretroviral therapy is well documented. However, the selection in vivo of HIV-1 mutant species that can escape host immune system HLA class I restricted cytotoxic T-lymphocyte responses has, to date, only been ...

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Cytotoxic Activity in Freshwater Sponges

open access: yes, 2007
Cytotoxic compounds, presumably functioning in defense against predators, parasites, and infectious organisms, are produced or sequestered by a variety of invertebrate animals.

Suppression of lung adenocarcinoma migration through organelle alkalization by human lactoferrin – albumin fusion

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This paper reveals how human lactoferrin–albumin fusion (hLF‐HSA) potently suppresses lung adenocarcinoma cell migration. hLF‐HSA upregulates NHE7, leading to Golgi alkalization, disruption of the Golgi secretome, downregulation of MMP1, and reversal of EMT. These findings suggest a novel Golgi‐targeting strategy to suppress cancer cell migration.

Synthesis and cytotoxic activity of sulfur linked mono / bis heterocycles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
1173-1178A variety of sulfur linked mono / bis heterocycles have been prepared and their cytotoxic activity on A549 lung adenocarcinoma cells studied. The imidazolyl and benzimidazolyl thiadiazoles (7c, 8c) display appreciable cytotoxic activity against ...

Cytotoxic effects of selective species of Caryophyllaceae in Iran [PDF]

open access: yesResearch Journal of Pharmacognosy, 2014
Cancer is a major cause of death worldwide and causes serious problems in human life. It is developed by uncontrolled growth of a cell or a group of cells.
