Dark Patterns and Addictive Designs

open access: yesWeizenbaum Journal of the Digital Society
The proliferation of digital platforms has given rise to manipulative design practices known as “dark patterns,” which exploit users’ vulnerabilities to influence behavior, leading them to make decisions against their own interests.

Plant volatiles, rather than light, determine the nocturnal behavior of a caterpillar. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2006
Although many organisms show daily rhythms in their activity patterns, the mechanistic causes of these patterns are poorly understood. Here we show that host plant volatiles affect the nocturnal behavior of the caterpillar Mythimna separata. Irrespective

Pre‐analytical optimization of cell‐free DNA and extracellular vesicle‐derived DNA for mutation detection in liquid biopsies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pre‐analytical handling critically determines liquid biopsy performance. This study defines practical best‐practice conditions for cell‐free DNA (cfDNA) and extracellular vesicle–derived DNA (evDNA), showing how processing time, storage conditions, tube type, and plasma input volume affect DNA integrity and mutation detection.

Dark diversity in the dark: a new approach to subterranean conservation [PDF]

open access: yesSubterranean Biology, 2019
When trying to predict biodiversity patterns, species absences in a community can be as informative as species presences. The concept of dark diversity considers geographical and ecological filters to set an expected species pool and to compare it with ...

Deciphering transcriptional plasticity in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma reveals alterations in sensory neuron innervation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pancreatic sensory neurons innervating healthy and PDAC tissue were retrogradely labeled and profiled by single‐cell RNA sequencing. Tumor‐associated innervation showed a dominant neurofilament‐positive subtype, altered mitochondrial gene signatures, and reduced non‐peptidergic neurons.

Dark Silicon Patterning: Efficient Power Utilization Through Run-Time Mapping

open access: yes, 2017
An efficient run-time application mapping approach can considerably enhance resource utilization and mitigate the dark silicon phenomenon. In this chapter, we present a dark silicon aware run-time application mapping approach that patterns active cores ...

Dark Patterns – Mechanismen (be)trügerischen Internetdesigns

open access: yes, 2021

Dark Pattern Guardian:Detection Of Dark Patterns in Online Games

open access: yes
Dark patterns -manipulative design techniques used in gaming apps—often undermine user autonomy and negatively impact the overall user experience. Dark Pattern Guardian is a Chrome extension designed to detect and mitigate these deceptive practices by analyzing user interfaces and interactions directly within the browser.

CCDC80 suppresses high‐grade serous ovarian cancer migration via negative regulation of B7‐H3

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PAX8 is a lineage‐specific master regulator of transcription in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) progression. We show for the first time that PAX8 facilitates proliferation and metastasis by repressing the cell autonomous tumor suppressor CCDC80 and inducing B7‐H3 expression.

The Dark Side of Social Media: Analysing Dark Pattern Combinations and Their Impacts

open access: yesIJIE (Indonesian Journal of Informatics Education)
In today’s digital era, technology is essential in daily life, transforming interactions and activities. However, the rise of “Dark Patterns - deceptive design practices in websites and apps raises significant ethical concerns. Originally defined by User
