Integrating Dark Pattern Taxonomies

open access: yesCoRR
The problem of ``Dark Patterns" in user interface/user experience (UI/UX) design has proven a difficult issue to tackle. Malicious and explotitative design has expanded to multiple domains in the past 10 years and which has in turn led to multiple taxonomies attempting to describe them.

CD47 promotes mitogen‐activated protein kinase and epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition molecular programs to drive prometastatic phenotypes in non‐small cell lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Beyond its role in immune evasion, this study identified that CD47 drives tumor‐intrinsic signaling in non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Transcriptomic profiling and functional studies revealed that CD47 regulates cell adhesion, migration, and metastasis through an ERK–EMT signaling axis.

Why Don’t You Let the Light In? Developing Radiant Patterns for a Critical Game Aiming Player Empowerment

open access: yesJournal on Interactive Systems
The exponential growth of the digital games industry has intensified the use of Deceptive Patterns (DPs) – design strategies that, while profitable, undermine players’ psychological well-being by frustrating their needs for autonomy, competence, and ...

Heterozygous loss‐of‐function alleles associate the conserved 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease EXOSC10 with hypersensitivity to the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
EXOSC10, an essential nuclear RNA exosome‐associated 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease, is inhibited by the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU), and EXOSC10 depletion increases 5‐FU sensitivity. The colon‐cancer variant EXOSC10S402T, located in a proteolysis motif, is stable and nuclear but nonfunctional in vivo.

Dark patterns in persuasive computing.

open access: yes, 2022
Dark patterns are user interface patterns that, by exploiting the psychological features of attracting and retaining attention, force consumers to make decisions that benefit service providers and ensure business profitability.

Dark Patterns in Digital Design: A Review and Assessment via Risk, Trust and Diversity Scores

open access: yesITEGAM-JETIA
Digital platforms increasingly shape everyday life, yet their design choices often undermine consumer welfare using dark patterns which are deceptive interfaces that manipulate users’ decisions.

Ultraviolet inflorescence cues enhance attractiveness of inflorescence odour to Culex pipiens mosquitoes.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Inflorescence patterns of ultraviolet (UV) absorption and UV-reflection are attractive to many insect pollinators. To understand whether UV inflorescence cues affect the attraction of nectar-foraging mosquitoes, we worked with the common house mosquito ...

SPECTRAL AND SPATIAL SELECTIVITY OF LUMINANCE VISION IN REEF FISH

open access: yesFrontiers in Neural Circuits, 2014
Luminance vision has high spatial resolution and is used for form vision and texture discrimination. In humans, birds and bees luminance channel is spectrally selective – it depends on the signals of the long-wavelength sensitive photoreceptors (bees) or

Interaction of HS1BP3 with cortactin modulates TKS5 localisation, cell secretion and cancer malignancy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Here, we demonstrate that HS1BP3 interacts with Cortactin through a proline‐rich region (PRR3.1) and show that this interaction, and HS1BP3 itself, promote cancer cell proliferation and invasion. Inhibition of this interaction leads to build‐up of TKS5 in multivesicular endosomes and altered secretion of CD63 and CD9, providing an explanation for the ...

Dark patterns: How design tricks manipulate users [PDF]

open access: yes
In the vast landscape of the internet, where convenience and user engagement reign supreme, a shadowy realm lurks beneath the surface—dark patterns. These patterns are a digital maze designed to subtly manipulate internet users.
