Pyramid: Enhancing Selectivity in Big Data Protection with Count Featurization

open access: yes, 2017
Protecting vast quantities of data poses a daunting challenge for the growing number of organizations that collect, stockpile, and monetize it. The ability to distinguish data that is actually needed from data collected "just in case" would help these ...

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Study on the Corrosion Behavior and Mechanism of Supersonic Flame Sprayed C276 Coating in Simulated Seawater Environment

open access: yesMetals
In this study, a Hastelloy C276 coating was fabricated on the surface of Q345B steel using high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) spraying technology, and the corrosion behavior and mechanism of the coating in a simulated seawater environment were investigated ...

Design principles for the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR): A formal concept analysis and its evaluation

open access: yesInformation Systems, 2020
Data and software are nowadays one and the same: for this very reason, the European Union (EU) and other governments introduce frameworks for data protection — a key example being the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). However, GDPR compliance is

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Rapid screening of the stability of polyacrylamide-based hydrogel coatings via droplet microarray analysis and interpretable machine learning

open access: yesnpj Materials Degradation
The unsatisfactory stability of hydrogel coatings hinders their functional and service performance. Until now, the development of high-performance hydrogel coatings largely relies on the intuition and prior experience of researchers. Machine learning, as

COVID-19 contact tracing apps: a stress test for privacy, the GDPR, and data protection regimes

open access: yesJournal of Law and the Biosciences, 2020
Digital surveillance has played a key role in containing the COVID-19 outbreak in China, Singapore, Israel, and South Korea. Google and Apple recently announced the intention to build interfaces to allow Bluetooth contact tracking using Android and ...
