Acute splenomegaly, haemolysis, and thrombocytopenia following luspatercept initiation in a patient with transfusion‐dependent thalassaemia: A case report

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, Volume 206, Issue 6, Page 1806-1810, June 2025.
Summary Patients with transfusion‐dependent thalassaemia (TDT) require chronic, life‐sustaining red blood cell transfusions, which contribute to iron overload and associated morbidity and mortality. Luspatercept, an inhibitor of the transforming growth factor‐beta pathway, decreases transfusion requirements in a subset of transfusion‐dependent β ...

Implications for soluble iron accumulation, oxidative stress, and glial glutamate release in motor neuron death associated with sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

open access: yesNeuropathology, Volume 45, Issue 3, Page 177-201, June 2025.
Oxidative stress in sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has been evidenced by accumulation of oxidatively modified products of nucleic acids, lipids, sugars, and proteins in the motor neuron system of brains and spinal cords obtained at autopsy from the patients.

Deferiprone and gallium-protoporphyrin have the capacity to potentiate the activity of antibiotics in Staphylococcus aureus small colony variants [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Small colony variants (SCVs) of bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus are characterized by a reduced colony size and are linked to increased antibiotic tolerance and resistance.

Tumoroid Model Reveals Synergistic Impairment of Metabolism by Iron Chelators and Temozolomide in Chemo‐Resistant Patient‐derived Glioblastoma Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 20, May 29, 2025.
This study investigates the metabolic vulnerabilities of glioblastoma (GBM), an aggressive brain tumor. Research demonstrates that iron chelation therapy, in combination with standard chemotherapy, significantly enhances the efficacy of treatment against resistant GBM cells in a 3D tumoroid model.

Effects of chelators (desferal, deferiprone & deferaairox) on the growth of klebsiella and aeromonas isolated from transfusion dependent thalassemia patients [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Poster Presentation (Doctor’s Session)Infection is among the leading causes of death for thalassemia major patients. The known predisposing factors of infection include prior splenectomy, iron overload and use of iron chelator such as desferal ...

Induction of Cell Death by Combined Treatment with Photosensitizer‐Chitosan Nanoparticles and the Ferroptosis Inducer RSL3 in Breast Cancer Cell Lines

open access: yesAdvanced NanoBiomed Research, Volume 5, Issue 5, May 2025.
This study demonstrates that combination of phosphosensitizer‐conjugated chitosan nanoparticles and ferroptosis inducer RSL3 increases cell death in mesenchymal breast cancer cells. Data suggests that this is attributed to variations in ferroptosis‐related protein expression, lipid peroxydation and mitochondrial function.

Effect of trace iron levels and iron withdrawal by chelation on the growth of Candida albicans and Candida vini [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The iron requirements of the opportunistic pathogenic yeast, Candida albicans, and the related nonpathogenic spoilage yeast Candida vini were investigated along with their responses to various exogenous iron chelators.

Nickel hydroxide films in contact with an electroactive solution. A study employing electrochemical impedance measurements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The deactivation of nickel hydroxide films after prolonged storage times without use was studied. This study was carried out in the context of the Rotating Disc Electrode Voltammetry (RDEV) andElectrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) when the nickel ...

Transferrin Receptor Promotes Endometrial Cancer Proliferation by Activating the Iron‐Dependent PI3K/AKT/mTOR Signaling Pathway

open access: yesCancer Science, Volume 116, Issue 5, Page 1352-1365, May 2025.
TFRC may serve as a critical prognostic indicator for risk assessment in EC patients and propose TFRC as a promising therapeutic target to impede EC progression. The upregulation of TFRC‐mediated iron absorption facilitated the proliferation of EC, suggesting that iron chelators had the potential to be a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of
