The ‘Attack of the Demyelinator’ [PDF]

open access: possiblePractical Neurology, 2013
Here we present a novel way of accessing medical students and junior doctors and thus breaking down the much discussed and dreaded ‘neurophobia’ that is rampant in our medical schools and hospitals.1 In this comic strip entitled ‘The Attack of the Demyelinator’ we attempt to temper ‘neurophobia’ by enticing the student through graphic art.

A Review of Clinical and Imaging Findings in Tumefactive Demyelination.

AJR. American journal of roentgenology, 2021
OBJECTIVE. Tumefactive demyelination mimics primary brain neoplasms on imaging, often necessitating brain biopsy. This article reviews the literature for the clinical and radiologic findings of tumefactive demyelination in various disease processes to ...

Demyelinating neuropathies

Current Opinion in Neurology, 2003
To review recent advances in heritable demyelinating neuropathies and their genotype-phenotype correlations. Two themes dominated the literature on demyelinating neuropathies in the past 2 years: (1) the dissection of the localization and roles of new molecules in the axon-Schwann cell unit, including periaxin and connexin32, which are mutated in ...

Demyelinating pseudotumor

Annals of Diagnostic Pathology, 2002
Demyelinating disease presenting as a solitary contrast-enhancing mass poses a diagnostic challenge for both radiologists and surgical pathologists. We report the cases of two female patients, aged 23 and 37 years, who exhibited the clinical and radiologic features of a space-occupying mass strongly suggestive of neoplasia.

Demyelination

2016
Abstract This chapter describes various clues to the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) based on the history, physical examination and investigation. Red flags that should alert the clinician to an alternative diagnosis are listed. Disorders that may present like MS and lead to erroneous diagnosis are discussed.

Statins and Demyelination

2008
Statins are inhibitors of the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase, which are widely prescribed for their cholesterol-lowering properties in order to reduce atherogenesis and cardiovascular morbidity. Moreover, statins have been shown to exert pleiotropic immunomodulatory effects that might be of therapeutic benefit in autoimmune disorders ...

Proteinases and demyelination

Journal of Histochemistry & Cytochemistry, 1981
Our interest in proteolytic enzymes derives from our work on the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). In this disease of the central nervous system the myelin sheaths enveloping the axons disintegrate, usually in a patchy manner beginning around small veins or near the ventricles, resulting in lesions or “plaques.” The cause of MS is still unknown.

Pediatric Demyelination

Continuum, 2016
This review summarizes a general approach to pediatric demyelination as well as specific features of each of the acquired demyelinating syndromes to help clinicians in their evaluation of children with these disorders. Case studies are included to illustrate the expanding phenotype of many of these syndromes. With the creation of consensus definitions ...

Dissecting demyelination

Nature Neuroscience, 2007
The loss of central nervous system myelin and the failure of remyelination by oligodendrocytes contribute to the functional impairment that characterizes diseases such as multiple sclerosis. Why myelin repair fails in multiple sclerosis is currently unclear; however, new understanding of the generation of oligodendrocytes and myelination during ...

Ultrastructural mechanisms of macrophage-induced demyelination in CIDP

Neurology, 2018
Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is a form of chronic neuropathy that is presumably caused by heterogeneous immune-mediated processes. Recent advances in the search for autoantibodies against components expressed at nodal regions,
