Difference Festival: Fighting superbugs

open access: yes, 2023
FIGHTING SUPERBUGS: JOIN THE FIGHT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE! The overuse of antibiotics has resulted in the emergence of ‘superbugs’ which are bacterial strains that have become resistant to most antibiotics. Superbugs can spread easily to affect anyone, of

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Existence Results and Finite-Time Stability of a Fractional (p,q)-Integro-Difference System [PDF]

open access: yes
In this article, we mainly generalize the results in the literature for a fractional q-difference equation. Our study considers a more comprehensive type of fractional p,q-difference system of nonlinear equations.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.

Review: Britta Kalscheuer & Lars Allolio-Näcke (Eds.) (2008). Kulturelle Differenzen begreifen [Understanding Cultural Differences: An Interdisciplinary Perspective on the Concept of Transdifference]

open access: yesForum: Qualitative Social Research, 2009
The 20 articles in this volume discuss, from different methodological and theoretical perspectives, the term "transdifference," which was introduced by Helmbrecht BREINIG and Klaus LÖSCH. This work is based on the first volume "Differenzen anders denken,"
