Differential Effects of Age and Sex on the Postnatal Responsiveness of Brown Adipose Tissue to Prolactin Administration in Rats [PDF]

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, 2003
Previous studies have shown that prolactin administration to pregnant rats results in offspring with enhanced abundance of the brown adipose tissue‐specific uncoupling protein (UCP) 1. The present study therefore aimed to determine whether a similar effect was observed after birth and if the sex of the animal further influenced the responsiveness of ...

Differential myelopoietic responsiveness of BALB/c (Itys) and C.D2 (Ityr) mice to lipopolysaccharide administration and Salmonella typhimurium infection [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 1992
Inheritance of the Ityr or the Itys allele of the Ity murine gene confers resistance or increased susceptibility, respectively, to Salmonella typhimurium infection. Recent studies have documented that Ity gene expression may determine net intracellular replication of S. typhimurium by modulating macrophage function.

Differential Response of Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein-Positive Astrocytes in the Rat Prefrontal Cortex Following Ethanol Self-Administration [PDF]

open access: yesAlcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 2015
Prefrontal cortex (PFC) dysfunction is believed to contribute to the transition from controlled substance use to abuse. Because astrocytes have been suggested to play a key role in the development and maintenance of drug-seeking behaviors, we sought to determine whether PFC astrocytes are affected by ethanol (EtOH) self-administration.EtOH consumption ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

The Differential Response of Cortical and Trabecular Bone to Aluminum Administration in the Rat

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1985
Osteomalacia has been noted following in vivo aluminum (Al) loading in the rat by some investigators but not by others. To determine whether the response of bone to Al differs as a function of the skeletal site examined, quantitative histology of cortical and trabecular bone was done in the tibiae from control (C, n = 10), Al-treated (AL, n = 9 ...

Next‐generation proteomics improves lung cancer risk prediction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This is one of very few studies that used prediagnostic blood samples from participants of two large population‐based cohorts. We identified, evaluated, and validated an innovative protein marker model that outperformed an established risk prediction model and criteria employed by low‐dose computed tomography in lung cancer screening trials.
