A Dimethyltryptamine-Forming Enzyme in Human Blood

American Journal of Psychiatry, 1973
An enzyme capable of forming the hallucinogen dimethyltryptamine was found in human red blood cells, plasma, and platelets. The enzyme activity in red blood cells and plasma was not significantly different in psychiatric patients from that in normal subjects.

Ayahuasca, dimethyltryptamine, and psychosis: a systematic review of human studies

open access: yesTherapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology, 2017
Ayahuasca is a hallucinogen brew traditionally used for ritual and therapeutic purposes in Northwestern Amazon. It is rich in the tryptamine hallucinogens dimethyltryptamine (DMT), which acts as a serotonin 5-HT2A agonist.

Urinary Excretion of Dimethyltryptamine in Liver Disease

American Journal of Psychiatry, 1979
The urinary excretion of N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) was higher in patients with severe liver disease than in normal subjects. This difference remained significant when patients with all grades of hepatic encephalopathy were excluded. Patients with liver disease whose mental states were normal excreted amounts of DMT similar to those of patients with ...

Urinary dimethyltryptamine and psychiatric symptomatology and classification

Psychological Medicine, 1977
SynopsisThe excretion of dimethyltryptamine (DMT) was studied amongst 122 recently admitted psychiatric patients and 20 normal subjects. DMT was detected in the urine of 47% of those diagnosed by their psychiatrists as schizophrenic, 38% of those with other non-affective psychoses, 13% of those with affective psychoses, 19% of those with neurotic and ...

N,N-Dimethyltryptamine–Induced Psychosis

Clinical Neuropharmacology, 2015
N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a 5-hydroxytryptamine 2A and 1A receptor agonist that exhibits potent psychoactive properties in humans. Recreational use of this drug has increased precipitously and is likely to result in an increase in patients presenting with substance-induced psychoses. The present case provides an early example of substance-induced

N,N-Dimethyltryptamine: An Endogenous Hallucinogen

1981
Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the biosynthesis, metabolism, pharmacology, and properties of N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), leading to a conclusion that DMT may be a neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain. The identification of DMT and other hallucinogens in man explains the experience of hallucinatory phenomena in general.

Dimethyltryptamine, A Do-It-Yourself Hallucinogenic Drug

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1967
To the Editor:— Almost immediately after the hallucinogenic effects of drugs such as mescaline, LSD, and peyote were made known, legal and medical restrictions were applied. Those nonmedical individuals who were determined to experience the hallucinatory effects sought illegal supply channels. As restrictions became more effective, the availability of

Human psychopharmacology of N,N-dimethyltryptamine

Behavioural Brain Research, 1995
We generated dose-response data for the endogenous and ultra-short-acting hallucinogen, N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), in a cohort of experienced hallucinogen users, measuring multiple biological and psychological outcome measures. Subjective responses were quantified with a new rating scale, the HRS, which provided better resolution of dose effects ...

A new metabolic pathway for N,N-dimethyltryptamine

Biological Psychiatry, 1986
N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) undergoes a major structural alteration when added to whole human blood or its red blood cells in vitro. A new high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) peak is present in extracts of these treated tissues. The compound responsible for this peak has been identified by ultraviolet spectrophotometry and by mass spectrometry ...
