Cerotelium dioscoreae, a new rust fungus on Dioscorea
Mycological Research, 1997A new rust fungus on Dioscorea, Cerotelium dioscoreae, sp. nov. is described from Ecuador. Similarity with other phakopsoraceous genera and the assignment of the new fungus to Cerotelium is discussed.

Biosynthesis of diosgenin in Dioscorea tubers
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1961Abstract The incorporation of radioacetate into diosgenin by homogenates of Dioscorea floribunda has been demonstrated by rigorous purification of the isolated sapogenin. Mevalonic acid is not incorporated into diosgenin to any significant extent under these conditions.

Dioscorea howardiana, a new species in Dioscorea section Trigonobasis (Dioscoreaceae)
Brittonia, 2007Dioscorea howardiana is proposed as a new species from Mexico and Central America as far south as Panama, and is described and illustrated. It most closely resemblesD. liebmannii. Relationships, distribution, and ecological preferences of the new species are discussed.

Steroidal Sapogenins in Dioscorea collettii
Planta Medica, 1983Ten Steroidal compounds were isolated from the acid-treated rhizome of wild DIOSCOREA COLLETTII collected from Sichuan province, China. Five of them were identified as diosgenin ( 1), yamogenin ( 2), beta-sitosterol ( 3), Delta (3,5)-deoxytigogenin ( 5) and isonarthogenin ( 9).

An Alkaloid of Dioscorea hispida, Dennst
Nature, 1951THE alkaloid dioscorine, C13H19O2N, was first isolated in 1894 by Boorsma1 from Dioscorea hirsuta, Bl., and obtained in a crystalline condition by Schutte2. On the basis of degradation experiments, Gorter3 in 1911 suggested that the alkaloid belonged to the tropane group, and proposed the following structure:

A method for the determination of diosgenin in yams has been developed by using gas chromatography. The minced undried sample from large tubers, or sliced dried sample from small tubers, is hydrolysed by refluxing with 2 N hydrochloric acid, dried, extracted with light petroleum and the solvent removed.
